Tottenham's best Premier League XI of all time: Five British players make the cut

Tottenham Hotspur have been home to some of the Premier League era’s most iconic players, making the task of selecting an all-time XI far from straightforward.

From legendary defenders and midfield maestros to world-class forwards, Spurs have had no shortage of talent to choose from since the Premier League began in 1992.

The XI features arguably two of Britain’s greatest ever footballers in Gareth Bale and Harry Kane, alongside several other players who left a lasting mark on Tottenham and England’s top flight.

With club legends such as Ledley King and Jan Vertonghen among those to narrowly miss out, FootballWhispers selects Tottenham’s best all-time Premier League XI.

GK: Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris spent more than a decade as Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper and became one of the most important leaders in the club’s Premier League era.

The Frenchman made 361 Premier League appearances for Spurs and captained the side for much of his time in North London, including their run to the 2019 Champions League final.

A World Cup winner with France, Lloris combined excellent shot-stopping with the consistency required to remain at the highest level for so long.

RB: Kyle Walker

Kyle Walker spent six seasons with Tottenham and established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dominant full-backs before leaving for Manchester City in 2017.

His blistering pace made him incredibly difficult to beat defensively, while his ability to recover when caught out became one of his biggest strengths.

Walker was also part of the Spurs side that reached the Champions League for the first time in 2010 and helped establish himself as one of England’s best right-backs.

CB: Toby Alderweireld

Toby Alderweireld formed one half of a formidable Belgian centre-back partnership at Tottenham alongside fellow countryman Jan Vertonghen.

Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2015, Alderweireld quickly became one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders, combining his defensive positioning with an outstanding range of passing. He was a key part of Mauricio Pochettino’s best Spurs sides and played a major role as the club challenged for the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final.

CB: Jan Vertonghen

Alongside Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen completed a centre-back pairing that gave Tottenham both quality and consistency during one of the best periods in the club’s Premier League history.

The Belgian spent eight years in North London after joining from Ajax in 2012, making more than 200 Premier League appearances. Vertonghen was comfortable defending and bringing the ball out from the back, while his versatility also allowed him to operate at left-back when required.

LB: Danny Rose

Danny Rose became one of the Premier League’s best attacking full-backs during his peak years at Tottenham and was a key part of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Rose was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in consecutive seasons in 2015/16 and 2016/17, underlining just how highly he was regarded at his best.

His performances helped Spurs establish themselves as regular title challengers, while his aggressive style and ability to get forward made him an important outlet on the left.

CM: Moussa Dembele

Mousa Dembele was arguably one of the most technically gifted midfielders to play for Tottenham during the Premier League era.

The Belgian had an extraordinary ability to retain possession under pressure, using his strength, balance and close control to glide past opponents in midfield.

While his goals and assists were relatively modest, his influence on Spurs' style of play was enormous, with teammates and opponents regularly praising his ability to dominate the centre of the pitch.

CM: Luka Modric

Luka Modric spent four seasons at Tottenham before leaving for Real Madrid in 2012, where he went on to become one of the most decorated midfielders in football history.

The Croatian was instrumental in helping Spurs qualify for the Champions League for the first time in the Premier League era and developed into a world-class playmaker during his time at White Hart Lane. Modric subsequently won six Champions League titles with Real Madrid, as well as the 2018 Ballon d'Or.

RW: Son Heung-min

Son Heung-min arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and went on to become one of the greatest and most popular players in Tottenham’s modern history.

The South Korean developed a phenomenal partnership with Harry Kane and became the first Asian player to reach 100 Premier League goals. He also won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021/22 after scoring 23 goals, before eventually succeeding Kane as Spurs captain.

Son's time in North London ended on the ultimate high when he lifted the Europa League trophy as captain after Tottenham defeated Manchester United in the 2025 final in Bilbao.

AM: Dele

Dele arrived from MK Dons for just £5 million in 2015 and quickly became one of the most exciting young players in the Premier League.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, he produced two outstanding seasons, winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2015/16 and again being named in the PFA Team of the Year the following campaign. His goals from midfield were crucial as Spurs challenged for the Premier League title, while his ability to arrive late in the box made him a constant threat.

LW: Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale initially joined Tottenham from Southampton in 2007 as a left-back before transforming himself into one of the most devastating attacking players in world football.

His breakthrough came during the 2009/10 season, when he helped Spurs qualify for the Champions League and produced an unforgettable hat-trick against Inter Milan at San Siro the following campaign. Bale then moved to Real Madrid for a then-world-record fee in 2013, winning five Champions League titles and scoring twice in the 2018 final.

The Welshman returned to Tottenham on loan for the 2020/21 season, giving him a second spell in North London. With Wales, Bale played a starring role as they reached the Euro 2016 semi finals, their best ever finish at a major tournament.

Harry Kane is Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer and arguably the greatest striker in the club’s Premier League history.

The academy graduate scored 280 goals in 435 appearances across all competitions for Spurs, winning the Premier League Golden Boot three times and establishing himself as one of the most prolific forwards in English football.

Kane left Tottenham for Bayern Munich in 2023, but his legacy in North London was already secure. His goals, consistency and longevity make him an automatic choice to lead the line in Tottenham’s all-time Premier League XI.
