Whisper+ analysis
Authenticity (2/5): No clear links to Spurs
Tottenham are chasing Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, but the Mexican is already close to a deal with AC Milan.
This news comes from TBR Football, who claim a number of Premier League clubs are chasing him, including West Ham, but offer little that suggests Spurs are one of them.
Value (3/5): Will have to outbid Milan
The Italian side are said to be on the verge of wrapping up a £34 million deal, a reasonable price given the 23-year-old's market value of £31.25 million and four goals in four UEFA Champions League appearances this term.
Spurs will have to fork out more than that, and offer better wages, to lure him to North London, but still he is cheaper than many top centre-forwards on the market.
Suitability (4/5): Scoring against the elite
A tall, powerful central striker with a decent scoring record, Gimenez is very much the type of striker in demand at the moment, and two goals against Bayern Munich last night suggest he can mix it with the best.
His transfer would be music to the ears of Spurs, who are short of forward options amid their poor form.
Upgrade? (3.5/5): Can challenge Solanke
Dominic Solanke's injury leaves Richarlison and Will Lankshear as Spurs' only options up front, hence Spurs' need for reinforcements.
Gimenez would be thrown into the starting XI from the off, and Solanke's patchy form before injury makes the Buenos Aires-born Mexican a threat once he returns.
Logic (2/5): Milan the better option
The sight of Ange Postecoglou's side languishing deep in the bottom half of the table is unlikely to dissuade Gimenez from his move to Milan, even if Spurs are still in contention for three trophies after a 17-year silverware drought.
Tottenham have to get someone in before the window shuts in 10 days, but they could be wasting their time here.
Whisper+ verdict: 14.5/25
Only a huge, sudden bid can turn this around for Spurs, otherwise we'll be seeing Gimenez at the San Siro very soon.
