Switzerland have become a mainstay at major footballing tournaments and this summer is no different, but this encounter against Estonia are not likely to test them too much physically or mentally, but will allow their players to express themselves.

Switzerland vs Estonia prediction: Damage limitation for the away side

Key stats

  • Switzerland have one win in their last six games
  • Estonia's last win was in January 2023
  • Murat Yakin's side have scored 12 goals in their last five home matches

Pre-game odds and win probability: Switzerland are overwhelming favourites

  • Home: 1/5 (1.2) – 83.3%
  • Draw: 6/1 (7.0) – 14.3%
  • Away: 11/1 (12.0) – 8.3%

As is the case with a lot of international friendlies there is usually one side who are major favourites and expected to stroll to victory and that is Switzerland in this particular clash. Yakin's men have not been in great form as of late, so a morale-boosting win could be just what they need.

If this ends up being anything but a comfortable Switzerland win then it would be a major shock. That's why we are going all in on the Switzerland -2 handicap, although this won't appeal to everyone, especially those who like to back the underdog. Last five H2Hs: History is looking ominous for Estonia

This fixture has happened on four separate occasions throughout history dating back to 1992 and the most recent was a 1-0 win for Switzerland in 2015 which goes along with how the other games tuned out. Estonia have lost all four meetings against their upcoming opponents, so will be hoping to buck the trend this time around.

Switzerland preview: The perfect match to boost confidence

Switzerland know they must improve their form heading into Euro 2024 or run the risk of being dumped out at the first possible opportunity. This could be a chance for Yakin to experiment with some players and perhaps try some new tactics given how favoured they are to win.

Predicted lineup: Mvogo (GK), Akanji, Elvedi, Schar, Ndoye, Zakaria, Xhaka, Widmer, Aebischer, Amdouni, Shaqiri

Estonia preview: A game they could do without

With no wins since a 1-0 victory against Finland in January 2023, Estonia could have done without playing a big nation getting ready to perform at Euro 2024. However, all bad form must come to an end at some point and this could well be the miracle they need.

Predicted lineup: Hein (GK), Pikk, Tougjas, Paskotski, Kuusk, Hussar, Vetkal, Soomets, Poom, Tamm, Pukki

Xherdan Shaqiri of Switzerland
Xherdan Shaqiri is his country's fourth-top scorer of all time – Photo by Icon Sport

Player to watch: Xherdan Shaqiri

A well-known name all over Europe for his stints in the Premier League, Bundesliga and Serie A, but Xherdan Shaqiir is now plying his trade out in the MLS. The winger-come-striker has been a top servant for his country throughout the years and will look to star in what may well be his final tournament.

A player capable of the spectacular

Shaqiri is his country's fourth top scorer of all time and needs just four more stikes to move joint-second and this game against a lowly-ranked Estonia side could be the perfect chance to grab a few goals.
