For a team that only departed the third tier of German football in 2023, Elversberg’s rise to the top flight has been a genuine fairy tale. The newcomers made a dream start to Bundesliga life with victories over Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach in their opening two fixtures.
Despite another respectable showing, Vincent Wagner’s men were beaten on matchday three by Bayern Munich and have since drawn 0-0 with Schalke 04 and lost to Union Berlin, extending their winless run to three matches.
Still, a return of seven points from the first 15 available represents a solid tally for a team in their maiden top-flight campaign. Schwarz und Weiss have put themselves in early contention for European qualification, sitting just one point outside the final continental spot.
However, Elversberg are also just three points ahead of the drop zone, meaning they could end the weekend outside the bottom three only on goal difference if they lose to Augsburg and other results go against them.
Saturday’s hosts have beaten Augsburg only once in the last nine meetings but will hope to turn a corner as the teams face off for the first time in over a decade.
Like Elversberg, Augsburg also won their opening two league matches this season – and three across all competitions – to give Manuel Baum a perfect start to his first full season after being appointed on a permanent basis following a brief interim spell last term.
Since then, two 2-2 draws either side of a 3-2 defeat to Werder Bremen have brought Fuggerstadter crashing back down to earth, although a hard-earned point against the reigning champions in Saturday’s derby will undoubtedly provide some confidence ahead of the trip to Saarland.
Having conceded at least two goals in each of their last four outings, Saturday’s visitors have reverted to their old habit of leaking goals after starting the current campaign with back-to-back clean sheets and what appeared to be improved defensive solidity.
Now missing Abdulai Juma Bah, who sustained an injury late in the Bayern draw, Augsburg have had a spanner thrown into the works. However, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw’s display off the bench last time out offers some optimism.
At the top end of the pitch, the Bavarians will need Robin Fellhauer to deliver again after he netted his third goal in four league outings last time out.
