St Pauli preview: Aiming for first competitive victory over Monchengladbach since February 2011

St Pauli booked their spot in the third round of the DFB Pokal on Tuesday, when they edged out Hoffenheim on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time at the Millerntor-Stadion.

Head coach Alexander Blessin will hope the cup victory can serve as a springboard for a turnaround in the Bundesliga, where his side have lost each of their last five matches since picking up seven points from the first three games.

This poor run of results has been owing to a drop-off in performance at the attacking end of the pitch, where they have netted just once across their most recent five league games, having scored seven in the first three matches.

St Pauli have picked up seven points from their eight Bundesliga games so far to sit 14th in the league standings, level on points with 15th-placed Augsburg and just three points above the relegation zone.

While St Pauli will be looking to build on their cup victory and return to winning ways in the league, they have struggled for results on home turf, where they have lost four and managed just one win from their last eight league games.

Predicted lineup: Vasilj (GK), Wahl, Smith, Mets, Saliakas, Sands, Fujita, Oppie, Sinani, Kaars & Pereira

Last five games

  • St Pauli 2-2 Hoffenheim (St Pauli win on penalties) (DFB Pokal)
  • Frankfurt 2-0 St Pauli (Bundesliga)
  • St Pauli 0-3 Hoffenheim (Bundesliga)
  • Werder Bremen 1-0 St Pauli (Bundesliga)
  • St Pauli 1-2 Bayer Leverkusen (Bundesliga)

Borussia Monchengladbach preview: Seeking first Bundesliga win since March

Borussia Monchengladbach picked up a morale-boosting result in midweek when they secured a 3-1 victory over Karlsruher in the DFB Pokal second round.

In a one-sided affair at Borussia Park, Shuto Machino, Nico Elvedi and Haris Tabakovic all found the back of the net to fire the hosts to a comfortable victory and send them through to the third round.

Borussia Monchengladbach now turn their attention to the Bundesliga, where they are the only side yet to taste victory this season and are without a win in 15 consecutive games, losing 10 and claiming five draws since beating Leipzig 1-0 on March 29.

Not only have Monchengladbach conceded the second-highest number of goals in the league this season (18), but their woeful start to the campaign has also been owing to a lack of cutting edge up top, where they have scored just six goals, one fewer than any other side in the division.

Eugen Polanski’s men will be backing themselves to find their feet this weekend as they journey to the Millerntor-Stadion, where they are unbeaten in five of their last six visits, claiming three wins and two draws since March 1996.

Predicted lineup: Nicolas (GK), Sander, Elvedi, Diks, Honorat, Reitz, Engelhardt, Netz, Machino, Stoger & Tabakovic

Last five games

  • Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 Karlsrusher (DFB Pokal)
  • Borussia Monchengladbach 0-3 Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)
  • Union Berlin 3-1 Borussia Monchengladbach (Bundesliga)
  • Borussia Monchengladbach 0-0 Freiburg (Bundesliga)
  • Borussia Monchengladbach 4-6 Frankfurt (Bundesliga)

Player to watch — Haris Tabakovic

Haris Tabakovic was a standout performer in Borussia Monchengladbach’s 3-1 cup victory over Karlsruher last time out and the Bosnian striker will be one to look out for this weekend.

Tabakovic scored one and set up another to help Monchengladbach cruise past Karlsrusher and has now been involved in six goals and assists across his last seven games for club and country.

The 31-year-old striker should spearhead the visitors’ attack once again, forming the front three with Shuto Machino and Austrian forward Kevin Stoger.
