Dortmund to win

Dortmund have won four of their previous five encounters with Sporting, securing a 3-0 victory in last week's first leg in Portugal.

Borussia Dortmund have one foot in the next round of the Champions League following their 3-0 victory over Sporting in Lisbon last week but we are predicting a much closer second leg at the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on Wednesday.

Dortmund vs Sporting prediction: A home win expected

Key Stats

  • Dortmund have won six of their nine matches in this season's Champions League.
  • Sporting have failed to win any of their last five Champions League games, four of which have ended in defeat.
  • Six of Sporting's nine Champions League games this season have ended with both teams scoring.
  • Both teams have scored in four of Dortmund's last six outings in all competitions.

Correct score prediction: Dortmund 2-1 Sporting

Sporting simply have to take the game to their hosts on Wednesday night and we are expecting their top scorer Viktor Gyokeres to start this game which will give the visitors more of an attacking threat. However, the more Sporting push for goals, gaps will open up in their defence and we can see Dortmund taking full advantage of any slip-ups.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Bookies backing a home win

  • HOME: 19/20 (1.95) – 51.3%
  • DRAW: 3/1 (4.00) – 25%

*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

Dortmund are the expected winner of this game with a probability of 51.3% and we can't argue with the bookmakers on this prediction.

Dortmund preview: Six wins from Nine in the CL

The opening 45 minutes in Lisbon failed to produce a single goal but once Dortmund made the breakthrough, they never looked back.

Top scorer Serhou Guirassy broke the deadlock on the hour mark and eight minutes later, Pascal Gross made it 2-0. Karim Adeyemi scored a third Dortmund goal in the 82nd minute to secure an impressive 3-0 victory for the Germans who now have one foot in the last 16.

Midfielder Felix Nmecha and defender Ramy Bensebaini have both been ruled out of action until March so will miss the trip to Portugal this week.

Predicted lineup: Kobel (GK), Ryerson, Schlotterbeck, Svensson, Gross, Sabitzer, Can, Brandt, Guirassy, Adeyemi & Gittens

Sporting preview: Winless in their last five CL games

Sporting have it all to do if they are to remain in the Champions League this season.

Viktor Gyokeres, who has been in fantastic form this season, was only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench in last week's first leg against Dortmund. The hosts really missed the Swede's presence up-front and introduced the former Coventry City striker just before the hour mark but he couldn't really get into the game.

Geny Catamo, Pedro Goncalves and Nuno Santos could miss the second leg due to injury, while Gyokeres is expected to replace Conrad Harder in the starting lineup.

Predicted lineup: Silva (GK), Reis, St. Juste, Debast, Fresneda, Diomande, Araujo, Quenda, Simoes, Trincao & Gyokeres

Player to watch: Serhou Guirassy

Dortmand's 28-year-old striker Serhou Guirassy heads into the second leg against Sporting on the back of seven goals in his last ten appearances across all competitions for the German giants.

We're backing Guirassy to put in another impressive performance in the Champions League this week and wouldn't be surprised to see the Guinea international add to his 10 goals in this competition.

The Dortmund striker has 13 goal involvements in the Champions League

The former Stuttgart and Rennes forward also has three assists to his name, taking his goal involvements in the 2024/25 Champions League campaign to an impressive 13.
