Despite eventually finishing 19 points behind PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord made a blistering start to last season, collecting 28 points from the first 33 available and leading the way until round 11.

However, De Stadionclub were ultimately unable to sustain their title challenge under the tutelage of Robin van Persie and, at one stage, looked in danger of missing out on Champions League football.

After 16 months in charge, Van Persie was relieved of his duties, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst has returned for a second spell after previously leading the club between 2015 and 2019, a period that included an Eredivisie title.

The 51-year-old is already a popular figure among the Feyenoord faithful, and his strong start – five pre-season wins from five, with 14 goals scored and just four conceded – has only boosted his standing with supporters.

Van Bronckhorst won three of his four season openers during his first spell in Rotterdam, and with his side brimming with confidence, there is plenty of optimism heading into this weekend's short trip.

After picking up just one point from their final 13 league matches last season, Sparta were left to reflect on what might have been for their European ambitions, ultimately finishing five points behind Groningen in ninth place.

Unsurprisingly, De Kasteelheren parted ways with Maurice Steijn and appointed Rogier Meijer, who had been out of work since leaving NEC Nijmegen in June 2025.

Wins in each of Meijer's first three pre-season outings by a combined score of 13-0 made for a positive start, but no victories in the following four matches have somewhat dampened the mood.

A derby victory would be the perfect way to lift spirits at Sparta, but while they did beat Feyenoord in their most recent meeting, that was their first win in 17 encounters since December 2017.

Whispers predicts: Sparta Rotterdam 1-3 Feyenoord

Feyenoord are unbeaten in their last seven trips to Het Kasteel, winning five of those matches. Another away victory at 7/10 (1.70) looks an appealing bet.

Seven of the last nine meetings have produced at least three goals, so over 2.5 goals at 17/32 (1.53) is worth considering.

With no clean sheets in their last four matches, Feyenoord have looked vulnerable at the back, boosting Sparta's chances of scoring at least once and landing BTTS – Yes at 4/7 (1.57).

Ayase Ueda claimed the Eredivisie Golden Boot last season with 25 goals, including two against Sparta. He is 9/10 (1.90) to score at any time this weekend.
