BTTS - Yes

Only once have both teams not scored in five of the last six games involving both sides

Spain U21 and England U21 will meet at the Stadion Antona Malatinskeho on Saturday night in the quarter-final of the U21 UEFA European Championships. Spain finished top of Group A to reach the knockout stage, while England had to settle for a runners-up spot in Group B to Germany.

Spain U21 vs England U21 prediction: Young Lions to be tamed?

Key stats

  • Spain are unbeaten in the competition so far having achieved two wins and a draw in the group stage.
  • England are winless in two matches, and have only managed to keep one clean sheet in six in all competitions.
  • Spain and England's group games averaged a total of 3.3 and 2.3 goals respectively.

Correct score prediction: Spain U21 2-1 England U21

Spain have impressed more in the tournament so far and should be favourites to progress against an England side that have struggled in the last couple of matches. Given recent games, both teams have a good chance of scoring, but the Spanish should just edge it.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Spain installed as favourites by bookmakers

  • HOME: 13/10 (2.30) – 43.5%
  • DRAW: 23/10 (3.30) – 30.3%
  • AWAY: 21/10 (3.10) – 32.3%

As shown by the implied probabilities, Spain are favourites to progress to the semi-finals. Interestingly, an England victory is rated slightly above a draw.

Most recent H2Hs: England actually on top

England are actually unbeaten in the previous four H2Hs, winning twice and drawing twice. They have also kept a total of three clean sheets, so perhaps they are being underestimated by the bookmakers?

Player to watch: Roberto Fernandez

Roberto Fernandez has already scored in the tournament for Spain U21, and he is set to the lead the line once again. The Braga forward also ranks highly among his teammates for average shots on target (0.7) and total shots (1.7) per game, also surpassing a lot of the England U21 players.

It shows that Fernandez is not afraid to have a pop at goal when the opportunity arises, which can only be a good thing for his chances of scoring. Nonetheless, he could be key in unlocking what has been a fairly stubborn England defence so far.
