After a strong start to the season, which saw them lose just one of their first six matches in all competitions, Sassuolo's form has fallen off a cliff, and they have gone five games without a win.
Across those five games, they have picked up just one point, which has seen them slowly slide down the Serie A table, and they will now be concerned about what is over their shoulders.
It's important to remember that this is just their second season back in the Italian top flight after being promoted from Serie B, but after finishing 11th last season, there was optimism about what they could achieve this season.
The campaign is still young, but manager Alberto Aquilani will be desperate to get out of this rut as quickly as possible. On Monday evening, the former Liverpool midfielder is without the suspended Kristian Thorstvedt and the injured Fedde Leysen, Ismael Kone, Yeferson Paz and Daniel Boloca.
As for Fiorentina, another season of battling relegation looks inevitable after a chaotic start to the season.
The club are already onto their second manager of the campaign, after Paolo Vanoli was drafted in to replace Fabio Grosso, who was dismissed just three games into his tenure after he walked away from the Sassuolo job in the summer.
Vanoli has done little to suggest getting rid of Grosso was the right call, and given how ruthless the Fiorentina board can be, he will be well aware he needs points on the board quickly.
