Handed a daunting opening assignment against three-time winners Manchester United, Sabah’s 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford on their Champions League debut was hardly a surprise, though they showed glimpses of the quality that saw them crowned league champions last season.
Valdas Dambrauskas’s side wasted no time bouncing back, winning their next two outings by a combined score of 6-1 before being held to a goalless draw last time out on their return to action after the international break.
Unbeaten at home since May, the Owls would have relished hosting their first Champions League home game at their usual ground, but the Bank Respublika Arena does not meet UEFA’s capacity and infrastructure requirements for high-profile European matches.
Nonetheless, an electric atmosphere is expected in the Azerbaijan capital as Sabah become just the second team from the country – after Qarabag – to host a Champions League match, despite only being founded in 2017.
Home results will be key to Sabah’s prospects in the league phase, and a winning start against their weakest opponents on paper would be ideal, with clashes against Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, and Napoli still to come.
While their upcoming opponents are still adjusting to this level, Slavia Prague are competing in their second consecutive Champions League campaign – and fourth overall – after edging city rivals Sparta Prague to the 2025-26 Czech league title.
Riding a nine-game unbeaten run heading into their opener against Lens, Jindrich Trpisovsky’s side looked poised for victory after going a goal and a man up in the second half. However, they somehow contrived to lose 3-2, conceding twice in stoppage time.
Still, the Red and Whites did not allow that continental setback to derail their domestic campaign, recording four consecutive wins since, including a 1-0 triumph over Zlin on Friday, courtesy of Emmanuel Ayaosi’s 18th-minute strike.
That was Ayaosi’s third goal in his last five league appearances, and Tuesday's visitors will need their in-form 21-year-old to deliver on the continental stage as they look for their first group-stage victory in this competition since 2017.

Whispers predicts: Sabah 1-2 Slavia Prague
Sabah are expected to produce a much improved display compared to their Old Trafford rout, but we anticipate they will leave empty-handed once again, with Slavia Prague backed to come out on top at 1/1 (2.00).
However, the hosts are fancied to register their first-ever UCL goal and land BTTS – Yes at 29/50 (1.58).
Four of Sabah’s last five matches and six of Slavia’s last eight have produced at least three goals. Over 2.5 goals at 2/3 (1.67) looks likely on Tuesday.
