Correct score prediction: Rotherham 2-1 Port Vale

Port Vale returned to the third tier of English football after a one-year absence. They have had a poor track record against Rotherham in recent years, having lost the last three encounters between these sides.

While Rotherham were a mid-table team in League One last season, they were one of the best home teams with an impressive 11-5-7 win-draw-loss record at New York Stadium.

Taking everything into account, we are leaning toward Rotherham for the win.

Rotherham preview: Eyeing a return to the Championship

Rotherham have remained in League One since their relegation from the Championship during the 2023-24 season. The Millers endured a difficult time in the league last term, failing to realise their dream of getting back to the second tier. They managed to finish 13th on the table, 13 points above the relegation zone.

Matthew Hamshaw and his troops will try again this campaign, hoping that the arrival of Dru Yearwood, Josh Benson, Marvin Kaleta, Denzel Hall and ArJany Martha will bring them closer to their season goals.

Sam Nombe scored 14 goals for the Millers last term. He is expected to lead the line here, while Cameron Dawson continues in goal.

Predicted lineup: Dawson (GK), James, Agbaire, Jules, Rafferty, Spence, Yearwood, McWilliams, Hugill, Nombe & Gore.

Port Vale preview: No major injury concerns

Port Vale finished second in League Two last season to earn an immediate promotion back to League One, where they were relegated during the 2023-24 season.

Darren Moore’s side had a fairly good preseason, registering four wins, two draws, and one loss as they prepared for the 2025-26 campaign, which they will love to begin on a winning note despite being on the road.

It has been a busy summer for the club, bringing in Cameron Humphreys, Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel, Ben Waine, Jordan Shipley, Marko Marosi, Rico Richards, and Liam Gordon, with some of these players potentially making their debut on Saturday.

Ben Amos has been the undisputed starter in goal for the team, but the arrival of Marosi this summer should bring competition in the goalkeeping department.

Predicted lineup: Amos (GK), Hart, Heneghan, John, Croasdale, Plant, Walters, Shipley, Gordons, Richards & Stockley.
