Over 2.5 total goals

Two of the Netherlands’ three matches in Group D featured over 2.5 goals

Romania continue their Euro 2024 adventure against the Netherlands in the competition’s Round of 16 at the Fußball Arena München on Tuesday, 2 July. Can Romania reach the quarter-finals of the European Championship for the first time since 2000? Read our top Euro 2024 betting tips for the contest below.

Romania vs Netherlands prediction: Entertainment possible in Munich

Key Stats

  • Two of the Netherlands’ three fixtures in Group D featured at least three goals.
  • Both Romania and the Netherlands scored four times across three matches in the group stage.
  • Cody Gakpo found the net in two of the Netherlands’ three games in the group phase.
  • Romania have been averaging 2.0 cards per game at Euro 2024 so far.

Correct score prediction: Romania 1-2 Netherlands

Netherlands managed to score two goals in two of their three games in Group D and the Oranje could net another brace at Romania’s expense. The Romanians conceded two goals in their toughest test in the group stage (vs Belgium) and they could be exposed against another strong opponent on Tuesday. Netherlands have kept just one clean sheet so far however, and Romania could be good for a consolation.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Markets favour the Dutch

  • HOME: 13/2 (7.50) – 13.3%
  • DRAW: 10/3 (4.33) – 23.1%
  • AWAY: 4/9 (1.44) – 69.2%

*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

13/2 underdogs Romania are competing in the knockout stage of the European Championship for the first time in 24 years thanks to their promising group stage displays, and there was enough evidence in their performances against Ukraine, Belgium and Slovakia to suggest they can go toe-to-toe with the Netherlands in Munich.

This Netherlands outfit remain a shadow of previous Orange iterations, though, they did beat Poland and draw with France in the group stage and they were unlucky to lose a five-goal thriller against Austria having won the xG battle. The Dutch have a 69.2% chance of progressing to the quarter-finals according to the latest probability figures. Netherlands preview: Simons to come back in?

Netherlands have close to a clean bill of health ahead of Tuesday's contest and Ronald Koeman is unlikely to make many changes to the XI that lost 3-2 to Austria in the Oranje's last assignment. Xavi Simons could return, however.

Key duels

Cody Gakpo vs Andrei Ratiu

Cody Gakpo has chipped in with two goals for the Netherlands and the 25-year-old has been an impactful presence in general, averaging 2.30 shots per game. Romanian right-back Ratiu is having a strong tournament and his duel with Gakpo could be fascinating.

Tijjani Reijnders vs Razvan Marin

Tijjandi Reijnders has brought steel and structure to the Dutch midfield where he has been averaging 1.3 tackles per game. Reijnders ball-winning acumen could be tested by the creativity of Romania’s Razvan Marin.

Virgil Van Dijk vs Denis Dragus

Virgil van Dijk hasn’t been at his imperious best at Euro 2024 and the 32-year-old faces a potentially tricky and physical test against Denis Dragus. The Romanian striker has been averaging a meaty 2.30 fouls per game and he will be happy to ruffle van Dijk’s feathers.

Player to watch – Wout Weghorst

Despite clamours from the Dutch support, Wout Weghorst is unlikely to start against Romania on Tuesday, though the giant centre-forward will be worth watching closely if he is introduced from the bench for the fourth game in a row.

Weghorst can make another late impact

Super-sub Weghorst has been a proper game-changer for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 and he came on late to grab a goal and an assist in separate group stage matches for the Orange. The 31-year-old’s knack for turning the tide in the Netherlands’ favour could be evident again on Tuesday.

Winner’s next potential opponents

The winner of this matchup will meet with the winner of the other duel scheduled for today between Austria and Turkey. Netherlands have a better record than both of them, although in both cases it is much closer that we expected. Meanwhile, Romania have a losing record against Austria, but they've been pretty dominant against Turkey throghuout history: 14-7-5.

In any case, if Romania or Netherlands can get past Austria or Turkey, they will either meet England or Switzerland in the semi-finals. Finally, if they can reach the final, they can expect Germany, Spain, France, or Portugal.
