Roma totals - over 1.5 goals

The home side scored twice in three consecutive home European matches.

Jose Mourinho will take his Real Madrid side to his former team Roma for their second Champions League match on Wednesday, October 14, at the Stadio Olimpico.

This fixture is Roma's first home game in this competition for six years, after the Giallorossi's absence from Europe's premier club competition.

However, the home side's most recent continental glory arrived with Mourinho at the helm, when he led them to the Conference League title in 2021-22.

Roma's return to Champions League football did not go the way they would have dreamed, as they drew 1-1 away to Fenerbahce, which is not a result to be scoffed at, considering how difficult Turkey can be.

The reality is that they have drawn three of their last four continental matches, and the Wolves had to settle for a goalless stalemate against Como in Serie A at the weekend.

Still, Gian Piero Gasperini's men have made an impressive start to the season, and they topped Serie A up until that away draw with Como, but they are only two points behind current leaders, Inter Milan.

The Wolves enter this matchday in 17th place, just three spots below Wednesday's visitors, and a victory here would ensure they leapfrogged their former manager's men after two rounds.

There is genuine cause for concern for the home side, as they have lost three of their last five European matches at the Stadio Olimpico, winning just two matches in that run.

Additionally, their record against Los Blancos does not favour them, as they lost eight of the previous 12 head-to-heads, all of which came in this competition.

Real Madrid will be hoping to progress further into the competition this season, as opposed to last term when Bayern Munich dumped them out in the quarter-finals stage.

Mourinho's men have just been getting by since the start of the season, producing ideal results, but not convincingly, such as their 1-0 triumph over Villarreal over the weekend.

The win ensured they finish the matchday in fourth place, six points behind the current leaders, Barcelona.

Los Blancos may view this competition as a true path to silverware this term, considering how Barca have been performing, and after their matchday-one victory against Inter Milan, things are looking up for them on the continent.

Under Mourinho's guidance, Real have lost just one main-draw Champions League fixture, winning 15 and drawing three in that run.

Whispers predicts: Roma 2-2 Real Madrid

Both sides are currently in between having good and bad days, with the hosts drawing three of their last four outings, while the visitors lost four of their last eight Champions League matches away from home, leading to a selection of either double chance with Roma/ Draw at 1.80 odds or an 1×2 – Draw at 3.95 odds.

With the visitors keeping just two clean sheets across their previous eight wins in all competitions, Roma should get some joy on Wednesday night, and after scoring twice in each of their last three home European matches, opting for Roma's total to be over 1.5 goals at 2.17 odds makes sense.

In terms of goalscorers, this match features two of the best – Kylian Mbappe has been doing it on this stage for a while now and was the competition's Golden Boot winner last term, so backing him to score at 1.69 odds is the clear selection.

However, Donyell Malen has been a revelation for Roma this season, scoring six goals in as many Serie A matches, and after receiving his marching orders at the weekend, he will be desperate to come through for his team, suggesting it is worth backing him to score anytime at 2.27 odds.
