Real Salt Lake vs San Jose Earthquakes prediction: Real Salt Lake to edge close contest

Key stats

  • San Jose Earthquakes are without a win in any of their most recent six matches across all competitions, losing three and claiming three draws since June’s 4-2 victory over FC Dallas.
  • While Real Salt Lake have netted the opening goal in five of their last six matches, they have scored the second-fewest number of goals in the Western Conference so far (24).

Real Salt Lake were unlucky to have come away empty-handed against Cincinnati last time out and they will be looking to bounce back this weekend. San Jose Earthquakes, meanwhile, have suffered a slump in form in recent weeks, and we fancy Mastroeni’s men to make the most of their home advantage.

Real Salt Lake preview: Recent turnaround

Real Salt Lake were sent crashing back to earth last Sunday as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Cincinnati when both sides met at America First Field.

With nothing to separate the two sides for most of the game, substitute Luca Orellano came up clutch for Cincinnati as he netted a sublime curler from outside the box in the 87th minute to fire them to a fourth straight away victory.

Pablo Mastroeni’s men had gone unbeaten in each of their previous five matches, picking up four wins and one draw, having failed to win the seven games preceding that run (4L, 3D).

Real Salt Lake have picked up eight wins and four draws from their 23 MLS outings so far to collect 28 points and sit 10th in the Western Conference table, one point and one place below this weekend’s visitors.

San Jose Earthquakes preview: Defensive woes

San Jose Earthquakes failed to find their feet last Sunday as they fell to a 3-2 loss against Seattle Sounders when the two sides squared off at Lumen Field.

Preston Judd and Cristian Arango hit the target for the Quakes, but a brace from Daniel Musovski and Pedro de la Vega’s 69th-minute strike helped Seattle secure maximum points in front of their home supporters.

Bruce Arena’s side have now gone six back-to-back matches without a win across all competitions (3L, 3D), a run which has seen them crash out of the US Open Cup after losing on penalties to Austin FC in the quarter-finals on July 9.

Breaching opposing defences has not been a worry for San Jose Earthquakes, who have netted 46 goals this season, but they conceded the second-most number of goals in the West (42) — only LA Galaxy (48) have allowed more.

Predicted lineup: Daniel (GK), Romney, Floriani, Roberts, Espinoza, Kaye, Harkes, Ricketts; Arango, Judd & Bouda

Players to watch: Cristian Arango

Having joined San Jose Earthquakes from Real Salt Lake in January, veteran forward Cristian Arango has been on song for the Quakes this season and will be one to keep an eye on.

The Colombian international has racked up 11 goals and one assist in 20 league matches this term and is on course to surpass last season’s 17-goal tally for Real Salt Lake.

Arango failed to get amongst the goals when San Jose Earthquakes thrashed Real Salt Lake 4-0 in February’s reverse fixture at PayPal Park and the 30-year-old will be looking to haunt his former employers this weekend.

Having started 20 of San Jose’s 24 league games so far, he should spearhead the attack once again, forming the front three with 25-year-old Ousseni Bouda and American forward Preston Judd, who boasts six goal involvements in six league starts.
