Real Madrid 3-1 Atletico Madrid – 26th January 2023
Real Madrid and Atletico faced off in a Copa del Rey Madrid derby quarter-final in 2023 at the Bernabeu. Cup ties between the two sides always seem to have something a bit extra and this was no different. After 90 minutes, the scores were tied at 1-1 with the goals coming from Morata and Rodrygo. Then, in extra time a red card for Atletico's Stefan Savic proved decisive as Real Madrid went on to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Benzema and Vinicius.
Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid– 25th February 2023
Real Madrid failed to do the treble over Atletico in 2022/23 thanks to a Simeone masterclass at the Bernabeu in February 2023. In reality, the result suited neither team as it enabled Barcelona to stretch their lead at the top of La Liga heading into the run-in. On the night, Jose Gimenez put the visitors ahead in the 78th minute but they couldn't hold on to the win with Alvaro Rodriguez equalising five minutes from time.
Atletico Madrid 3-1 Real Madrid – 24th September 2023
In September 2023, Atletico Madrid were at their brilliant best and Real Madrid couldn't handle them. Morata and Griezmann put the home side 2-0 up after 20 minutes and despite Toni Kroos bringing Real Madrid back into the game before the break, a second-half strike from Morata secured the three points for the home side. The match put Atletico Madrid on top of the La Liga table but they have since dropped to third.
Real Madrid 5-3 Atletico Madrid – 10th January 2024
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid played out an eight-goal thriller in the Spanish Super Cup at the beginning of January. Controversially, the match was played in Saudi Arabia but that didn't take the fire away from the fixture. The match swung one way and the next and after 90 minutes, the score was tied at 3-3 after a late goal from Dani Carvajal. In extra time, Joselu and Brahim Diaz scored two late goals to send Real Madrid through to the final where they beat Barcelona.
Atletico Madrid 4-2 Real Madrid – 18th January 2024
A week later, the two teams met again in another classic in the Copa del Rey. This time, the match was played back in Spain at the Wanda Metropolitano but both clubs brought the drama back with them from Saudi Arabia. Once again extra time was needed after the match ended 2-2 after 90 minutes. This time, though, it was Atletico who had the last laugh with Griezmann and Riquelme scoring without reply to send Simeone's men through to the quarter-finals.
Potential MVP – Vinicius Jr
Brazilian superstar, Vinicius Jr, has missed a large chunk of the current season due to a thigh injury but has hit the ground running since returning at the beginning of January. The Brazilian has scored five goals in six appearances since his return, including a hat-trick against Barcelona in the Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia.
It doesn't appear that Real Madrid will make any transfers this January so the weight of expectation will be put on Vinicius Jr to lead the club to glory in La Liga and the Champions League. What better way to show he is ready for that pressure than to get on the scoresheet in the Madrid derby on Sunday?
