Rangers have started to find some form in recent weeks, responding to their European exit by winning four consecutive matches.
That run of form has taken them into second place in the Scottish Premiership, although they have failed to close the points gap on Celtic, who remain five points clear at the top of the league.
With the first Old Firm league match scheduled for next weekend, this match offers the hosts an opportunity to not only progress to the semi-finals of the League Cup, but also to land a psychological blow ahead of that game.
McInnes has no reason not to go as strong as possible here, but he is without some key players. Tuur Rommens, Youssef Chermiti, Jose Cifuentes and Lawrence Shankland have all been ruled out.
As for Celtic, this match is perhaps of slightly less importance, given that their Europa League campaign begins on Thursday night.
That match, and next weekend's Old Firm league clash, will take precedence even if Martin O'Neill is desperate to reach another cup final at Hampden Park before his expected retirement at the end of the season.
Celtic have been perfect in Scottish football so far this season, winning all seven of their domestic fixtures. The only blemish remains their 5-1 defeat to LASK in a Champions League playoff.
O'Neill could rest a few players ahead of what's to come, and he is also without the injured trio of Callum Osmand, Alistair Johnston and Jota.
