Rangers player salaries: Who is highest paid?

As one of the two biggest clubs in Scotland, it is unsurprising that overall Rangers player salaries are the second-highest in the division. At around £54m per season, their wage bill is only slightly less than Celtic’s at £59m but dwarves the rest of the division.

Like every club, the official salary of each player is impossible to know due to bonuses and incentives based on things like league position, European football, goals, clean sheets etc. However, as a base salary, we do know who the biggest earners at the club are.

Highest Rangers player salaries

Based on the 2022/23 season, where Rangers finished in second place in the Scottish Premier League, seven points adrift of Celtic, their five highest-paid players were:

1

Connor Goldson

£37,000 per week.

2

Alfredo Morelos

£33,000 per week.

3

James Tavernier

£30,000 per week.

4

Rabbi Matondo

£28,000 per week.

5

Ben Davies

£27,000 per week.

With Morelos leaving the club this summer on a free transfer due to the expiration of his contract, a hefty chunk will be taken off the Rangers' bill. Manager Michael Beale will be hoping that this means he is able to add a couple of star players as they look to wrestle the Scottish title away from Celtic next season.

Interestingly, Ryan Kent wasn’t in the top five earners at the club last season which perhaps goes a long way to explaining why he has decided to leave the club. Kent has long been regarded as one of Rangers’ best players and may have felt like his performances were underappreciated given that he was on only £18,000 per week in Glasgow.

Kent has since signed a four-year contract with Turkish giants, Fenerbahce, where he will reportedly earn more than what he was making at Rangers.

Lowest Rangers player salaries

Excluding youth players, several first-team players at Rangers may be looking to push for a new deal this summer, given they are among the club's lowest earners. The five worst-paid senior players at the club are as follows:

1

Nnamdi Ofoborh

£7,900 per week.

2

Jon McLaughlin

£6,100 per week.

3

Robby McCrorie

£5,700 per week.

4

Scott Wright

£5,600 per week.

5

Charlie McCann

£4,400 per week.

Given the average wage of a Rangers player currently stands at around £14,000 per week, it’s a testament to the club that they managed to reach the Europa League final in 2022. Under Beale's guidance, they may well be able to replicate that accomplishment once again next season after a strong second half to the 22/23 season.
