PSV Eindhoven rose to the occasion in their biggest test of the season so far, securing a resounding 3-1 victory in Saturday’s De Topper at the Johan Cruyff Arena, building on their 6-1 demolition of FC Utrecht six days earlier.
Peter Bosz’s side, however, were unable to replicate their domestic heroics in Europe, being held to a 1-1 draw by Shakhtar Donetsk in Thursday’s Champions League opener.
Nevertheless, De Rood-Witten have responded well since their 4-0 defeat to AZ Alkmaar in early August, going unbeaten in seven matches across all competitions (W5, D2).
However, PSV currently trail AZ Alkmaar by two points in the title race, a gap that could increase to five by the time Sunday’s clash with Sparta Rotterdam kicks off.
Having won each of the last eight meetings between the sides, PSV have dominated this fixture, and will expect nothing less than another victory. Sunday's hosts have scored a league-high four goals in the opening 15 minutes of matches this season, and another quick start this weekend could set them on course for victory.
Games involving Sparta have produced plenty of late drama this season, most recently in their 2-2 draw with PEC Zwolle, where Koen Kostons struck 10 minutes from time to deny the Rotterdam-based giants all three points.
Rogier Meijer’s side finished just five points off European qualification last season, but a slow start to the current campaign has dampened hopes of another continental push, though there is still plenty of time to turn things around.
A victory against PSV would provide the perfect catalyst for a turnaround, but De Kasteelheren will need to tighten up defensively, having conceded at least two goals in each of their last three games, as they prepare to face the league’s most potent attack.
Milan Zonneveld, with four direct goal contributions already this season, will need to be at his best if Sparta are to have any chance of upsetting PSV and ending their 17-game winless run in this fixture dating back to 2016.
