After stumbling into the new Champions League campaign, PSV Eindhoven finally got off the mark in Europe on Tuesday when they held on to see out a 1-0 victory over Portuguese powerhouse Porto at the Estadio do Dragao.
PSV kicked off their UCL journey with a 1-1 stalemate against Shakhtar Donetsk on September 10, before losing 1-0 against Leipzig in Germany on October 13, but Guus Til's 57th-minute strike proved decisive in Portugal to leave the home side empty handed.
Peter Bosz will urge his side to draw inspiration from the midweek result ahead of their return to Eredivisie, where they have suffered a dip in form in their most recent three matches, suffering back-to-back away defeats against Twente and ADO Den Haag on either side of a 2-0 victory over Heerenveen on October 9.
Having kicked off the season with a 2-2 draw with Fortuna Sittard on August 8, the Boren bounced back with five consecutive victories, but a 3-2 loss at Twente on September 20 and last weekend’s 2-1 defeat against Den Haag at the Bingoal Stadium have interrupted momentum, leaving little room for mistake if they are to remain within touching distance of the league leaders.
Having clinched a third consecutive Eredivisie crown last season, PSV Eindhoven have picked up 19 points from their opening nine games of their title defence to sit third in the league table, four points behind Feyenoord at the top of the pile.
On the other hand, Feyenoord failed to make it two wins from two in the Champions League last time out when they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Spanish outfit Real Betis at the Estadio de la Cartuja.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men edged out Italian side Como 3-2 in matchday two on October 14 to bounce back from a 5-1 opening-day thrashing at the hands of Barcelona, but they were guilty of a lack of cutting edge at the attacking end of the pitch in Spain, with Isco converting his penalty shortly before the hour mark to hand the hosts a deserved victory.
Attention now returns to the Eredivisie, where Feyenoord have flown out of the blocks this season and are on a run of five wins from their last five, including a thrilling 4-3 victory over Telstar at the BUKO Stadion last weekend.
The 16-time Eredivisie champions have picked up seven wins and two draws from their opening nine matches, and this impressive run has been built on potent output in attack, having netted a staggering 31 goals already, while allowing 10 at the opposite end of the pitch.
With five of Feyenoord’s seven victories coming away from home, the Rotterdam outfit could make history this weekend by winning their first six away games to start a new Eredivisie campaign, highlighting their ability to get results on the road.
However, they will need to be at their best against an opposing side who have won each of the last five meetings between the two teams, scoring 14 goals and keeping three clean sheets since losing on penalties in the Super Cup back in August 2024.
