The first round of qualifying is already underway, with some sides having played their opening legs this week before the return fixtures take place next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

In this preview, we take a closer look at the Conference League clash between Pen-y-Bont and FC Santa Coloma, a huge fixture for the Welsh side that will be played at Cardiff City Stadium rather than their usual home of DragonBet Stadium.

Unusually, this will not be the first meeting between the two sides, with Pen-y-Bont and FC Santa Coloma facing each other in the first qualifying round of the Conference League in 2023.

The first leg ended 1-1 at Bridgend's Brewery Field, with Chris Venables finding the back of the net for Bont.

However, Venables was then sent off in a fiery second leg, allowing Santa Coloma to score twice in extra time and edge past the Welsh outfit.

The 40-year-old striker played a key role again recently for Rhys Griffiths' side, scoring 10 minutes into the JD Cymru Premier play-off final as they defeated Haverfordwest 2-0 to secure European qualification.

Since that victory, Pen-y-Bont have played just one pre-season friendly, beating Trethomas Bluebirds 3-0.

Pen-y-Bont will also have to adapt to unfamiliar surroundings ahead of this one, with their European home fixture being moved to Cardiff City Stadium due to DragonBet Stadium not meeting UEFA requirements.

The Andorran side, who have won more top-flight titles than any other club in their league with 13, ended their campaign with 13 wins, five draws and six defeats from their 24 league outings to secure another European qualification.

Víctor Vázquez's men finished 10 points behind champions Inter before ending their season with a disappointing cup final defeat to AC Escaldes.

Santa Coloma's victory in 2023 was the second of three consecutive first qualifying round wins in the Conference League, and they enter this tie as favourites while looking to maintain their strong record at this stage of the competition.

With both sides having been out of competitive action for several months, predicting the starting lineups could prove difficult as both managers may look to introduce new faces ahead of the first leg.

Whispers predicts: Pen-y-Bont 1-2 FC Santa Coloma

Santa Coloma travel to Cardiff with a stronger European record than their opponents and will hope that experience can prove decisive. We expect them to take a narrow advantage back to Andorra after the first leg.

Both sides are averaging around one goal per game across their last five outings in all competitions, so we do not expect a high-scoring encounter despite backing over 2.5 goals as the top tip.

It will be interesting to see how Pen-y-Bont cope without their leading scorer from last season and how their attack adapts in their first competitive fixture since the play-off final.
