Paris FC entered matchday six boasting one of only two unbeaten records in Ligue 1, alongside leaders Monaco, and were favourites to claim all three points at Stade Yves Allainmat-Le Moustoir, but ultimately fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Lorient.
That marked a first league defeat in seven matches for Liam Rosenior’s side since May 10. Despite the setback, Paris FC gave a good account of themselves and should approach their upcoming tie against Rennes with their heads held high.
However, Rennes were the last team to beat Paris FC before Saturday’s disappointment in Lorient, with May’s 2-1 defeat, sealed by two goals in two minutes, extending the wait for a first win in this fixture to six matches.
Still, Paris FC have reason for optimism this weekend, as they are unbeaten in their last five home league matches, dating back to last season, having collected 13 points from a possible 15, while scoring 11 goals and conceding just twice in that run.
With consecutive matches against Monaco and Lens – two of Ligue 1’s European representatives – after Sunday’s assignment, the hosts have a golden opportunity over the next three matches to showcase their continental credentials.
With just a three-day turnaround from their recent Europa League assignment, Rennes head to the capital slightly disadvantaged physically, but buoyed by their win over OFI Crete on Thursday at Roazhon Park.
Just as they did in their previous league clash with Auxerre, Franck Haise’s men produced late drama again, with Mahamadou Nagida and Abdelhamid Ait Boudial both scoring in the final 14 minutes to secure a comeback victory.
Les Rouge et Noirs could hardly have done better than picking up back-to-back wins as a response to their 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Lyon just before the international break, which was their first defeat of the season.
However, the upcoming run of matches – starting with trips to Paris and then Juventus – will provide a clearer indication of whether Rennes can build on last season’s sixth-place finish and potentially secure a return to the Champions League after a four-year absence.
Haise is yet to lose to Rosenoir in their previous two meetings from their spells at Nice and Strasbourg, and the 55-year-old will hope to get the better of his opposite number once again.

Whispers predicts: Paris FC 2-1 Rennes
The away side have collected more points than any other Ligue 1 side over the last five gameweeks, making them arguably the division’s most in-form team. However, Paris FC’s strong home record makes them narrow favourites, and we expect the hosts to justify that status by claiming victory at 5/4 (2.25).
Rennes’ six league matches have produced 22 goals in total, so entertainment is likely whenever they take to the field. Over 2.5 goals at 2/3 (1.67) appears to be a strong selection.
Golden Boot holder Esteban Lepaul has eight goals in his last 10 league appearances, and his 8/5 (2.60) anytime goalscorer option looks tempting this weekend.
> Paris FC to win at 5/4 (2.25) | Likelihood: Probable
> Over 2.5 goals at 2/3 (1.67) | Likelihood: Probable
> Esteban Lepaul anytime goalscorer at 8/5 (2.60) | Likelihood: Probable
