Coventry to Keep a Clean Sheet

Coventry ended 2025-26 season having kept three clean sheets in their final six matches

With Coventry City preparing for their first season back in the Premier League since 2000-01, they must take their pre-season campaign seriously, starting with a clash at Sixfields Stadium against hosts Northampton Town on Saturday.

Northampton are preparing for life in League Two after suffering relegation from the third tier, whereas Frank Lampard's Coventry ended 2025-26 as the winners of the Championship, earning promotion to the Premier League after a series of near misses.

Northampton finished last in League One with just 35 points from 46 games, and that means they will be competing in League Two for the third time in six seasons.

Boss Chris Hogg was appointed in May after the end of 2025-26, but it may be concerning to supporters that the 41-year-old has never previously taken up a role as head coach, though he was assistant manager at the likes of Bristol City and Norwich.

The hosts have already played one friendly, but they were beaten 3-0 by Leicester City on July 11, and that was their 13th consecutive loss in all competitions.

Saturday's meeting will be the two sides' first match against each other since 2021, while it will be their eighth overall meeting including their two friendly clashes, and a win for Northampton would be their third in four games against the visitors.

Coventry City managed to finally return to the Premier League, securing their promotion to the top flight in April, with Bobby Thomas's header against Blackburn Rovers enough to secure a point and guarantee a top-two finish with three games remaining.

Lampard has reforged a career for himself after struggling to impress at the top level at both Chelsea and Everton, guiding the club to first place in the Championship with 95 points.

The Sky Blues had finished in the playoffs twice between 2022-23 and 2024-25, with the club losing in the playoff final against Luton Town in 2023 on penalties in a particularly heartbreaking near miss.

Coventry announced the signing of Swiss international Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday, but it would be surprising if the defender was involved in his side's first game of pre-season considering he only exited the World Cup on July 12.

Whispers predicts: Northampton Town 0-3 Coventry City

While Northampton boast the advantage of playing at home, they are facing a team with considerably more quality, and anything other than a Coventry win would be surprising.

Given the hosts frequently conceded at least three goals, and also conceded three goals in their last friendly, backing the Sky Blues to Score Over 2.5 Goals may be sensible.

At the other end of the pitch, it is difficult to see how Northampton might threaten the visitors' defence, so Coventry to Keep a Clean Sheet could be a smart prediction.

The visitors were often able to score multiple goals in the second half of matches at the end of last season, and backing Coventry to Score Two Goals in the Second Half may be a value bet.
