Montpellier vs Monaco Top Picks and Predictions

A strange season continues for Montpellier whose goal-scoring efforts have earned praise throughout Ligue 1, but also scrutiny because of defensive lapses.

Over 3.5 Goals

Montpellier has the second-highest efficiency record when it comes to scoring goals after PSG, in a matter of fact, behind the Parisiens they are the only team that has scored more than 20 goals this season. However, they also have one of the worst defenses in the league, last week they lost against Toulouse 4-2 which gives them 19 conceded goals for the season, in only nine rounds of matches. Only two other teams allowed more goals this season, Auxerre (20) and Angers (21). Montpellier went over the 3.5 goal mark in five of their nine matches while Monaco stand at 3-6. In their h2h matches, the last three games had four or more goals.

Both Teams to Score – Yes

Monaco is somewhat similar to what Montpellier represents with a high-scoring offense, while the defense lacks stability. The past four matches between these teams backed this bet, and when it comes to their recent form, it is even more apparent. Montpellier has a four-game streak when both teams score a goal, while Monaco had it in five of their last seven games.

‘Drawing' a wrong conclusion

Montpellier is the only team in the league this season, after nine matches played, that hadn't drawn a game. They have four wins and five losses in their column. The reasoning for that is simple, their philosophy is based on scoring more goals than their opponent without much pondering about defending. The stat line against Toulouse last week showed how that works. Montpellier had 23 attempts at their opponent's goal, eleven more than Toulouse, they had ball possession most of the game but still lost by two goals. Things are not made easier for the hosts here as they are missing plenty of important players.

Montpellier possible 11: Kamara, Souquet, Julien, Cozza, Tchato, Ferri, Chotard, Nordin, Savanier, Khazri, Wahi.

Monaco struggled a bit a few weeks ago, it was an adjustment period as they play Europa League in the midweek, but they have managed to find their composure winning four straight games in the Ligue 1. Compared to their opponents, Monaco has only one more win at five, but they also lost only twice this season drawing the remaining couple of games which puts them at the fifth position in the league, only five points behind the third spot which brings in a Champions League qualification game.

Monaco possible 11: Nubel, Henrique, Badiashile, Disasi, Vanderson, Golovin, Camara, Fofana, Diatta, Ben Yedder, Embolo.

Team News:

Montpellier: Maxime Esteve, Jonas Omlin, Faitout Maouassa, Theo Sainte-Luce, and Dmitry Bertaud are injured while Pedro Mendes is doubtful.

Monaco: Ruben Aguilar and Willem Geubbels are missing through injury.
