After eight matches without a shutout, Minnesota managed a clean sheet against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday, but a lack of attacking threat meant they came away with only a point.

While that result prevented Cameron Knowles's men from suffering a fourth defeat in five games, it extended their winless run in the league since May, when they narrowly defeated Columbus Crew in a five-goal thriller.

Not since July 2024 – under Eric Ramsay – have the Loons gone seven matches without a victory, and Knowles will need to find a response to what is his toughest spell as manager so far.

For struggling teams, home matches usually offer the best chance to end a poor run and get back on track, but Minnesota have only managed two wins from eight MLS home games this season, leaving them with the third-worst home record in the West.

However, Minnesota can take confidence from their most recent encounter with San Diego, which saw Sunday’s hosts come from behind to claim a 2-1 win earlier this season.

San Diego conceded a 95th-minute winner on their return to league action last Thursday, suffering late heartbreak for the second time in three outings.

They would have feared the worst heading into the closing stages of their clash with Dallas, leading by only one goal.

However, Mikey Varas's men held on to secure all three points and, as a result, have climbed to 12th place, three points off a play-in spot midway through the campaign.

It has been a disappointing campaign for the California-based outfit, who had hoped to build on last season's run to the Conference finals – a journey that included beating Minnesota along the way.

On paper, facing a Minnesota side with an unconvincing home record should offer some optimism, but Sunday’s visitors have also struggled on the road, picking up just five points from a possible 21.

Whispers predicts: Minnesota United 3-1 San Diego

Minnesota will feel they are due a win and have been tipped to come out on top at 9/10 (1.90). We expect the home side to emerge victorious and provide themselves some respite.

Given Minnesota's all-or-nothing approach, it is no surprise that six of their last eight matches have seen both teams score. BTTS – Yes at 1/2 (1.50) looks a strong selection again.

After a slow start in San Diego, Marcus Ingvartsen has come to the fore this season with 11 goals in 17 league matches. He has also scored two of his side's last three away goals, so backing him to score anytime at 37/20 (2.85) appeals.
