Gianluigi Donnarumma swapped Paris Saint-Germain for Manchester City in the summer and has quickly established himself as a key figure under Pep Guardiola. However, the goalkeeper’s agent has sparked debate by suggesting that a return to Italy could appeal to his client.
Donnarumma’s rise to the top of European football has long appeared inevitable. Becoming a first-choice goalkeeper at the age of 16 already points to immense potential, but doing so at AC Milan, even during a difficult period for the club, confirmed his status as a generational talent. He later moved from Milan to PSG, a decision that was not forgiven by the Rossoneri supporters.
While his performances in Ligue 1 often fell short of expectations, Donnarumma still collected domestic titles. He ultimately justified his reputation in last season’s Champions League, playing a decisive role in PSG’s historic triumph. His displays were rewarded with the Yashin Trophy, recognising him as the world’s best goalkeeper.
A new home or a temporary solution?
During the summer, Donnarumma was informed by PSG’s hierarchy that his contract demands would not be met and that he was free to leave, with Lucas Chevalier arriving in Paris shortly afterwards. Feeling betrayed, the Italy international left France and joined Manchester City, where he has made an excellent start and appears settled.

In the Premier League, Donnarumma currently boasts a save percentage close to 72 per cent, although he has kept only five clean sheets so far. Despite this promising beginning, his agent, Enzo Raiola, son of the late Mino Raiola, has caused a stir by admitting that a return to Italy would be of interest if the opportunity arose. This has raised questions over whether Donnarumma viewed the move to Manchester as a stopgap while waiting for a chance to go back home.
Will Donnarumma return to Italy?
“Gianluigi is still settling in Manchester, getting used to the environment and his teammates. He is starting to understand the English league and really likes Manchester City’s project. He once told me that playing here for five or six years would be a real adventure. Of course, he was joking,” Raiola explained.
“However, if the possibility of a return to Italy were to present itself, it would interest us,” he added.
