Bernardo Silva is edging closer to a La Liga move despite Barcelona's decision to turn down the opportunity to sign the Manchester City midfielder.

The 31-year-old will leave the Etihad Stadium this summer when his contract expires in June, with his departure coming in the same window as that of manager Pep Guardiola, who has indicated he plans to step away from football for a period of time.

Silva had been heavily linked with Barcelona, but the La Liga champions have reportedly declined his approach to join Hansi Flick's squad. Despite that setback, the former Monaco man has not ruled out a move to Spain.

Atletico Madrid in pole position

According to Mundo Deportivo, Atletico Madrid have placed Silva on their shortlist for next season. Diego Simeone's side are currently light in midfield and are also looking to fill the creative void left by Antoine Griezmann's departure for Orlando City in MLS.

With Atletico set to compete in the Champions League next season, Silva would offer the kind of experienced, technically elite profile that Simeone has long valued. Should both parties reach an agreement on contractual terms, the move could materialise quickly.

Juventus, Galatasaray also in the picture

Atletico are not alone in their pursuit. Mundo Deportivo reports that Silva is “in talks” with several clubs. His former Manchester City team-mate Ilkay Gundogan, now at Galatasaray, has recently been in contact with him, while Juventus have also been a regular talking point in recent weeks. A move to Real Madrid would be a surprise, though it has been mentioned.

When asked about his future on Canal 11, Silva offered what he described as “a few hints” that pointed towards a summer move to Spain, in part because it would suit his family. With Barcelona out of the picture, Atletico appear to be the current frontrunners.

Either way, the situation will be resolved quickly: Silva has stated he wants his future settled before the start of the World Cup on 11th June.
