🔥 Our Hot tip

Under 3.5 goals

With both teams appearing cautious and neither in peak form, this has all the ingredients of a tense, low-margin affair.

Both tied on 10 points and in the top eight, Mainz 05 and Samsunspor head into the final match of Europe’s third tier competition’s league phase, hoping to remain in the automatic qualification spots by the end of the game.

The Turkish visitors are fifth, three spots ahead of the hosts – who occupy the final automatic spot – due to a superior goal difference.

Most recent head-to-head: First meeting between them

This will be Mainz’s first meeting against a Turkish side, while it will be Samsunspor’s fourth, having lost all three of their meetings against German opposition.

Mainz 05 preview: Home comfort masking broader struggles

Despite enduring a challenging domestic campaign, Mainz have found an unlikely refuge in the Conference League.

All three of their home victories this season have arrived in this competition, a stark contrast to their Bundesliga form, where wins have been in short supply.

The appointment of Urs Fischer has at least steadied the ship, as the former Union Berlin boss has overseen two draws from his opening matches, most notably a spirited 2-2 draw away at Bayern Munich.

Mainz became only the second Bundesliga side to take points from the champions this season. That followed a controlled 1-1 stalemate with Lech Poznan on matchday five.

Still, qualification is far from secure. Mainz’s slim one-point cushion over the chasing pack means that Fischer may need his first win in charge to avoid a nervy finish elsewhere.

Encouragingly, St. Jakob-Park has proven a reliable stage in Europe, even if league performances there have been inconsistent.

Anthony Caci is sidelined with a thigh injury, while Maxim Dal has a knee problem. Mainz lost Sota Kawasaki to injury at the weekend, while Nikolas Veratschnig is suspended.

Robin Zentner is nursing a groin issue, while a calf problem saw Silvan Widmer miss the draw against Bayern.

Predicted lineup: Batz; Bell, Maloney, Potulski; Maloney, Sano, Da Costa; Nordin, Lee; Hollerbach, Boving

Samsunspor preview: Momentum lost, belief remains

Samsunspor’s debut European campaign started in dream fashion. Three straight wins suggested a smooth path into the last 16, but recent lapses have complicated matters.

Squandered leads against Breidablik (2-2) and AEK Athens (2-1 loss) have dragged them back into the qualification battle.

Those issues mirror their domestic struggles, where the Red Lightning have gone six matches without a win. Even so, their away resilience offers genuine hope.

Across their last eight away fixtures in all competitions, Samsunspor have suffered just one defeat — and that came against Galatasaray.

Unbeaten on the road in the Conference League, the Turkish side may see this trip as the perfect opportunity to halt their slide and secure safe passage into the knockout rounds.

Samsunspor remain without  Bedirhan Cetin, Tanguy Coulibaly, and Afonso Sousa, all sidelined through injury.

Celil Yuksel is banned for betting violations, while Efe Ustun, Eyup Aydin and Cherif Ndiaye have been left out of the club’s registered league phase squad.

Predicted lineup: Kocuk; Yavru, Satka, Van Drongelen, Gonul; Makoumbou; Musaba, Holse, Ntcham, Kilinic; Mouandilmadji
