Liverpool have been linked with Brighton centre-back Luka Vuskovic, 19, as a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk.
Football Insider reported on 24 October that Liverpool and Real Madrid are interested ahead of a possible move in 2027.
No bid has been made, so the question is how likely this deal really is.
Luka Vuskovic to Liverpool rated ”Possible”
The Football Whispers Index scores every transfer rumour across five weighted factors. Read how it works here.
Luka Vuskovic to Liverpool
The Whispers Index weighs the money involved, Liverpool's need, the player's motivation, Brighton's willingness to sell and the strength of the reporting.
Liverpool's succession question at centre-back is the strongest argument for the move.
The weakest part is the evidence, because one Football Insider report and one TEAMtalk piece are all that stand behind it.
The most decisive fact is that nobody has reported a bid, an approach or talks.
Financial viability
- Brighton signed Vuskovic from Tottenham for a club-record £46m on 14 July 2026, and Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke reported on 24 October that they now value him at £100m.
- His contract at Brighton runs to 30 June 2031, so Liverpool would be negotiating with a club that holds five years of control.
- Liverpool were the highest-earning Premier League club in Deloitte's latest Football Money League, which puts a fee of that size within their reach.
Brighton paid Tottenham a club-record £46m for Vuskovic on 14 July, and Pete O'Rourke says they now want £100m.
A fee of that size would be a heavy outlay, but Liverpool were the highest-earning Premier League club in Deloitte's latest Money League.
The five years left on his contract, to June 2031, hand Brighton all the leverage in any negotiation.
Buying club need
- Virgil van Dijk is 35 and his Liverpool contract expires on 30 June 2027.
- Liverpool signed Jeremy Jacquet, 21, from Rennes this summer, while 19-year-old Giovanni Leoni is recovering from an ACL injury.
- Vuskovic is 19, stands 6ft 4in and scored six goals in 28 Bundesliga games on loan at Hamburg last season.
- Fabrizio Romano's comments on Liverpool's plans on 21 and 22 October centred on midfield targets Lamine Camara and Alex Scott, and did not mention Vuskovic.
Van Dijk is 35 and his contract ends in June 2027, which turns a succession plan into a real item rather than a talking point.
Liverpool have started building one with Jeremy Jacquet, 21, signed from Rennes this summer, and 19-year-old Giovanni Leoni, who is recovering from an ACL injury.
Vuskovic, 19 and 6ft 4in, scored six goals in 28 Bundesliga games for Hamburg, the sort of output you want from a centre-back who may lead a back line for a decade.
The counterweight is that Fabrizio Romano's Liverpool comments on 21 and 22 October were about midfield, with Lamine Camara and Alex Scott named and Vuskovic absent.
Player motivation
- Vuskovic joined Brighton on 14 July 2026 and has been a starter since.
- Opta rank Liverpool sixth in the world on 95.9 and Brighton eighth on 94.6, so the step up is a small one.
- Jacquet, signed in July, is already a Liverpool starter, so Vuskovic would arrive to compete rather than walk straight in.
- No comment from Vuskovic about a move to Liverpool has been reported as of 26 October.
Vuskovic has been a Brighton starter since joining on 14 July, so Liverpool would not obviously offer him more football.
Jacquet is already a starter at Anfield, which means Vuskovic would arrive to compete rather than walk in.
Opta rank Liverpool sixth on 95.9 and Brighton eighth on 94.6, so the sporting step up is slim.
Nothing from Vuskovic about a move has been reported, which leaves the player's side of the story blank.
Selling club incentive
- Brighton gave Vuskovic a contract to 30 June 2031 on the day he signed, 14 July 2026.
- Football Insider reported on 24 October that Brighton believe he is already a £100m player and will not sell him cheaply.
- Transfermarkt set his value at €65m on 7 October 2026, the highest of his career and well above the £46m Brighton paid in July.
- Alexis Mac Allister moved from Brighton to Liverpool in 2023 and is still at Anfield, so the two clubs have done business before.
Brighton gave him a contract to 2031 on the day he signed, and Football Insider says they will not sell him cheaply.
Transfermarkt valued him at €65m on 7 October, the highest figure of his career, so a sell-high instinct is plausible once a buyer matches it.
Alexis Mac Allister's 2023 move from Brighton to Liverpool shows the clubs can do business.
The distance between the reported £100m ask and that €65m valuation is where a deal would be won or lost.
Market momentum
- Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke reported on 24 October that Liverpool and Real Madrid are interested ahead of a possible 2027 move.
- TEAMtalk reported on 11 October that Chelsea and Liverpool are interested, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich also named.
- Neither report mentions a bid, an approach or talks with Brighton.
The link traces back to two originators: Football Insider's O'Rourke on 24 October and TEAMtalk on 11 October.
Every other site carrying the story is repeating one of those two.
Both put Real Madrid in the race, and TEAMtalk adds Chelsea, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Until Romano or David Ornstein weighs in, this stays at the speculation end of the market.
Luka Vuskovic to Liverpool: Will or won't it happen?
For this to happen, Van Dijk has to leave in June 2027 and Liverpool must decide a 19-year-old is the answer rather than a ready-made replacement.
Brighton would also have to accept a fee well short of £100m, or Liverpool would have to pay close to it.
It dies if Real Madrid or Chelsea move first, or if Liverpool spend their 2027 money on midfield instead.
