France is celebrated as football’s global talent factory, producing world-class prospects who regularly command massive fees from foreign giants. Ligue 1, in particular, carries a double-edged reputation. While the vast majority of French clubs operate on tight budgets and developmental models, Paris Saint-Germain exists in a different stratosphere altogether, backed by resources that dwarf the rest of the division.

This polarisation shapes the sporting landscape for the 2026/27 season. While PSG's astronomical squad value makes the title race look predictable from the outside, the real intrigue lies just beneath the surface.

From ambitious chasers like Monaco and Lyon trying to bridge the gap, to clubs fighting for survival on shoe-string budgets, the French top-flight remains a fierce, high-stakes ecosystem of tactical innovation and financial survival.

Here, FootballWhispers provides squad values for all Ligue 1 teams, as well as each club’s average value by squad size.

The one-club economy

Paris Saint-Germain does not simply lead Ligue 1; it operates in a league of its own. The Parisians’ squad is valued at an astronomical €1.36bn – more than four times the worth of the second-placed Monaco. That financial dominance is built on an average player value of €56.5m, making PSG the undisputed economic powerhouse of French football.

Monaco sit comfortably behind them with a squad value of €313.7m, but even that impressive figure pales in comparison to PSG’s behemoth status.

Behind the top two, there is little daylight between third-placed Strasbourg and sixth-placed Rennes. Olympique Lyonnais and Lille are sandwiched in between, with squad values fluctuating from €230m to €290m.

Blood, Gold & a Marseille mystery

Before pointing to Marseille’s fall from grace, it is Lens who top them in seventh position. The Blood and Gold, with €203.20 million, bring a slightly different dynamic, carrying an average player value of €7.01 million across 29 players.

Marseille despite being one of France’s most famous clubs, sit eighth with a squad valued at €181.85m across just 22 players. This compact squad structure contrasts with the larger rosters of Strasbourg and Lyon, potentially indicating a more focused recruitment strategy.

The top eight clubs represent the competitive heart of Ligue 1, where tactical innovation and smart recruitment can often bridge the gap to the financial giants. The gap between this leading group and the mid-table cluster is significant, underlining the polarised nature of French football's financial landscape.

Fresh money, fresh names

With an average player value of €6.9m, Paris FC have climbed to the ninth position with a squad valued at €173.2m. A landmark majority stake takeover of the club by the Arnault family – owners of LVMH – set the tone for their dramatic rise.

Nice sit close behind with a squad valuation of €142.1m and an average of €4.90 million per player, while FC Toulouse round out the top 11 with €128.90m and €5.16 million per player on average.

These clubs show how smart recruitment and youth development can create competitive squads despite limited financial resources.

Below €100m, every penny counts

For the bottom seven teams, from 12th to 18th, financial disparity becomes even more pronounced, with every squad value falling below the €100m mark.

Auxerre (€95.5m), Lorient (€90.05m), Brest (€66.6m), Angers (€64m) & Le Havre (€60.5m) all operate with significantly smaller budgets. Auxerre possess the largest squad in the league with 34 players, with an average value of only €2.81m, highlighting their volume-based approach to squad building.

The bottom-two consists of newly-promoted Troyes (€40.1m) and Le Mans (€28.1m), who complete the lower strata of Ligue 1, where survival often hinges on maximizing the potential of modestly valued assets.
