While this is a UEFA Conference League tie, the league phase in September remains some distance away for both teams.

The winners of this first qualifying round tie will still need to navigate three more rounds, consisting of six further matches, before reaching the league phase.

Meanwhile, teams eliminated from Champions League and Europa League qualifying can drop into the Europa League or Conference League for another opportunity to continue their European journey.

Qualification matches at this stage also bring the unique challenge of facing opponents at very different points in their seasons.

Some teams are already well into their domestic campaigns, while others are playing their first competitive fixture in several months.

David Healy's Linfield side have not played a league match for almost two months since their 3-1 victory over Dungannon Swifts, while Kalju were in competitive action just last week, beating city rivals FC Nõmme United 3-1 away from home.

The Belfast-based side travel to Estonia hoping to put an end to their recent European frustrations.

In 2022, Linfield looked set to become the first team from Northern Ireland's top flight to reach the group stages of a European competition, only to miss out after Jimmy Callacher's own goal sent their tie to penalties, where the Latvian side eventually progressed.

While Healy's 11-year spell at the club has brought plenty of success and historic achievements, European progression has continued to evade Linfield, and they will be determined to put that right across the two legs against Kalju.

The hosts, meanwhile, are much further into their domestic season and arrive with 19 league matches already under their belts.

Nikita Andreev's side sit third in the Estonian top flight and boast the division's best defensive record, although they have won just one of their last six matches and will hope their recent derby victory can provide a much-needed confidence boost.

Kalju are expected to name a similar lineup to the side that started against FC Nomme United, while Healy has new additions available that could be handed competitive debuts.

Whispers predicts: Kalju 2-1 Linfield

With one side well into their domestic season and the other preparing for their first competitive fixture in almost two months, this tie is difficult to predict.

Recent form suggests both teams are searching for consistency, although Linfield's lack of match practice could prove costly against a Kalju side that has been competing regularly.

Mattias Männilaan has been one of Kalju's standout performers this season, averaging almost a goal every two games with seven strikes in 14 starts.

We are backing the in-form attacker to find the net again and score his eighth goal of the campaign in the Conference League.
