Most recent H2Hs: Selecao yet to suffer defeat against Japan
Brazil have been utterly dominant in the history of this fixture, having picked up 11 wins and two draws from the previous 13 meetings between the two nations.
Their first encounter came in a friendly back in July 1989, when Brazil picked up a 1-0 victory, while their most recent meeting ended 1-0 in favour of the Selecao in June 2022, thanks to a second-half strike from Neymar.
Japan preview: Aiming to gather momentum ahead of World Cup
Things have cooled off for Japan since their dominant outing in the World Cup qualifiers, where they finished top of Group C with a four-point lead over runners-up Australia.
The Samurai Blue went unbeaten in nine of their 10 qualifying matches, picking up seven wins and two draws to collect 23 points and seal an eighth straight World Cup ticket since missing out in 1994.
Japan head into Tuesday’s tie fresh off the back of a 2-2 draw against Paraguay, where they fought back from behind twice to rescue a 2-2 stalemate and extend their unbeaten home run to 20 matches (17W, 3D).
However, with that result, Hajime Moriyasu’s men have failed to win their three friendly games since the turn of the year, playing out stalemates against Mexico and Paraguay, with a 2-0 defeat against the United States on September 10 sandwiched between the two draws.
Predicted lineup: Zion Suzuki (GK), Seko, Watanabe, Junnosuke Suzuki, Ito, Sano, Tanaka, Nakamura, Doan, Minamino & Ogawa
Last five games
- Japan 2-2 Paraguay
- USA 2-0 Japan
- Mexico 0-0 Japan
- Japan 6-0 Indonesia
- Australia 1-0 Japan
Brazil preview: Out to extend an impressive two-year streak
Brazil turned in a five-star team display on Friday as they steamrolled South Korea 5-0 when the two nations met in a friendly at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
Rodrygo and Chelsea ace Estevao both netted twice to put the Selecao in a commanding four-goal lead before Vinicius Jr put the icing on the cake with a 77th-minute strike.
This was Brazil’s first outing since closing out their World Cup qualifying campaign with a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Bolivia at the Estadio Municipal El Alto on September 10.
The defeat against Bolivia mattered little to Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who had already secured their spot in the World Cup, as they finished fifth in the group table with 28 points from 18 matches, eight points above the playoff spot.
Brazil journey to the Ajinomoto Stadium unbeaten in their last five international friendly matches, picking up three wins and two draws since a 4-2 loss against Senegal in June 2023.
Predicted lineup: Bento (GK), Vitinho, Militao, Gabriel, Santos, Guimaraes, Casemiro, Rodrygo, Vinicius, Estevao & Richarlison
Last five games
- South Korea 0-5 Brazil
- Bolivia 1-0 Brazil
- Brazil 3-1 Chile
- Brazil 1-0 Paraguay
- Ecuador 0-0 Brazil
Player to watch — Estevao

Chelsea youngster Estevao has been a bright spark for Brazil since his debut, and the 18-year-old winger will be one to keep an eye on this weekend.
Having netted the winner in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Premier League on October 4, Estevao put on a show for Brazil against South Korea to take his international goal tally to three.
He should retain his role in the Selecao starting XI on Tuesday, teaming up with the Real Madrid duo of Vinicius and Rodrygo at the attacking end of the pitch.
