Iraq to win

Iraq are unbeaten in their last five World Cup qualifiers

With only 90 minutes separating both sides from a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Iraq and Bolivia will battle it out in a winner-takes-all encounter at Estadio BBVA on Wednesday.

Bolivia had to see off Suriname to book their place in the final of the intercontinental play-offs, while Iraq secured automatic qualification thanks to their FIFA ranking.

In addition to our Iraq vs Bolivia prediction below, check out the rest of today's betting tips.

Iraq vs Bolivia key stats

  • Iraq have lost both of their last two outings after going unbeaten in the previous nine.
  • Low-scoring affairs have been a common theme for the Middle East nation, whose last nine matches have yielded fewer than three goals on seven occasions.
  • Bolivia's 2-1 triumph over Suriname last time out means they have now won consecutive matches, a welcome boost for a team that had gone six matches without a win (L5, D1) before that.
  • However, slow starts have continued to plague the South Americans, who have conceded the opener in seven of their last eight affairs.

Iraq's World Cup qualifying campaign has been eventful to say the least, and the Western Asians head into Monday's decider hoping to write the perfect ending to what has undoubtedly been a long journey.

After navigating three phases of the AFC qualifiers, Graham Arnold's men were narrowly edged out by Saudi Arabia on goal difference for an automatic place at June's showpiece event.

Mohanad Ali has the best goal-to-game ratio (0.39) of any active Iraq player.

The Lions of Mesopotamia then had to negotiate a two-legged tie against the United Arab Emirates to secure a place in the intercontinental play-offs—a task they accomplished with a 3-2 aggregate triumph, sealed by an Amir Al-Ammari penalty with almost the last kick of the second leg.

Iraq then travelled to Qatar for the December Arab Cup, where they won their first two matches to reach the knockout stage, but were beaten by Algeria in their final group game and then lost 1-0 to Jordan in the quarter-finals.

Now facing arguably the most important 90 minutes in the nation's history, Iraq must rise to the occasion if they are to end a 40-year wait to return to the global stage since their 1986 debut.

While Bolivia have appeared at more World Cup tournaments than their upcoming opponents, they too are seeking to end a long drought, having not qualified for football's biggest event since 1994.

🔍 Whispers Insight

Bolivia received the most red cards (five) during the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers.

Needing a win against Brazil in their final qualifier to secure CONMEBOL's place in the intercontinental play-offs, Oscar Villegas's men produced a shock 1-0 victory courtesy of Miguelito's first-half penalty.

La Verde then endured a poor run, winning just one of their following matches—a sequence that understandably raised concerns about their play-off prospects. When Bolivia fell behind to Suriname early in the second half last time out, many feared the worst.

However, goals from Moises Paniagua and Miguelito in the space of seven minutes completed a remarkable turnaround for the South Americans, who are now on the verge of achieving what seemed impossible after losing five of their opening six qualifiers.

Whispers predicts: Iraq 1-0 Bolivia

Despite their recent dip, Iraq have been the more consistent side over the past year, and we can see them edging a tight encounter at 2.50.

With so much at stake, both teams could be forgiven for adopting a cautious approach, so BTTS – No at 1.80 could well land.

Bearing that in mind, a 1-0 correct score at 7.00 looks a nail-biting but potentially rewarding option.

📈 Whispers' Tips

> 1x2 - Iraq to win at 2.50 | Likelihood: Probable

> BTTS - No at 1.80 | Likelihood: Probable

> Correct score - Iraq 1-0 Bolivia at 7.00 | Likelihood: Outsider
