Inter Milan + Over 2.5 goals

Sassuolo have failed to win five of their last six league matches, losing four and picking up one draw since May

Inter Milan are back in Serie A action for the first time since their seven-goal classic against Juventus when they play host to Sassuolo on Sunday. Sassuolo have won each of their last two games against the Nerazzurri, including a 2-1 comeback victory in their most recent visit to the San Siro back in September 2023.

FootballWhispers’ Inter Milan vs Sassuolo prediction examines the chances of both teams securing all three points this weekend.

Inter Milan vs Sassuolo prediction: Another high-scoring affair on the cards

Key stats

  • There have been at least three goals scored in six of Inter Milan’s last eight matches, with a staggering 36 goals netted across the eight games.
  • Sassuolo have failed to win five of their last six league matches, losing four and picking up one draw since claiming three consecutive victories in the Serie B between April and May.
  • Inter Milan have netted the opening goal in four of their most recent five games against Sassuolo, with the exception coming in May 2024, when they lost 1-0 at the Mapei Stadium.
  • The Nerazzurri are unbeaten in all but one of their last five competitive home matches, picking up three wins and one draw since the start of May.

Correct score prediction: Inter Milan 3-1 Sassuolo

Buoyed by their dominant display against Ajax in the Champions League, Inter Milan will be aiming to return to winning ways in the league following last weekend’s narrow loss against Juventus.

While Sassuolo will be looking to continue from where they left off against Lazio and extend their short streak against Inter, the Nerazzurri boast the firepower needed to get the job done and we are backing them to come out on top in front of their home supporters.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Inter Milan heavily backed by bookies

  • HOME: 2/7 (1.29) – 77.8%
  • DRAW: 19/4 (5.75) – 17.4%
  • AWAY: 9/1 (10.00) – 10%

With a 77.8% win probability, the bookmakers have Inter Milan as firm favourites to come out on top at the San Siro on Sunday.

While Sassuolo aims for a third consecutive victory against the hosts, they have been given just a 10% chance of doing that, while there is a 17.4% possibility of the game ending all square.

Both sides returned to winning ways in their last outings, with Inter edging out Ajax in their Champions League curtain-raiser on Wednesday while Sassuolo held on to see out a 1-0 home victory over Lazio.

Most recent H2Hs: Inter Milan holds the upper hand

Inter Milan boasts a superior record in this fixture across the last 10 meetings between the two teams, having picked up six wins and one draw since June 2020.

However, two of Sassuolo’s three wins in that time have come in the most recent two clashes between the two teams, having completed an impressive league double over the Nerazzurri back in the 2023-24 campaign.

Inter Milan preview: Out to avoid equalling an unwanted 40-year record

Inter picked up a dream start to the new UEFA Champions League campaign in midweek when they secured a 2-0 victory over Dutch powerhouse Ajax.

Marcus Thuram continued his hot streak in front of goal as he netted two headers from corner kicks in either half to fire the Italians to a comfortable victory at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Head coach Cristian Chivu will hope the midweek result can serve as a catalyst for an upturn in form in the Serie A, where the Nerazzurri find themselves on the cusp of equalling a four-decade club record of three defeats in the opening four games of a new season set back in the 1983-84 campaign.

Inter stormed to an emphatic 5-0 victory over Torino in the curtain-raiser on August 25 before suffering two consecutive defeats, including a 4-3 derby loss against Juventus at the Allianz Stadium last Saturday.

Predicted lineup: Martinez (GK), Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni, Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Sucic, Dimarco, Thuram & Martinez

Last five matches

  • Ajax 0-2 Inter Milan
  • Juventus 4-3 Inter Milan
  • Inter Milan 1-2 Udinese
  • Inter Milan 5-0 Torino
  • Inter Milan 2-0 Olympiacos

Sassuolo preview: Looking to snap a two-year run

Following a stuttering start to the new campaign, Sassuolo finally got off and running last weekend when they picked up a 1-0 victory over Lazio on home turf.

With nothing to separate the two sides at half time at the Mapei Stadium, Alieu Fadera made his mark moments after coming off the bench as he netted from close range to hand the hosts all three points.

This was a much-needed result for Fabio Grosso’s side, who were the only side without a point after the opening two games of the campaign, following defeats at the hands of Napoli and Cremonese respectively.

Sassuolo head into the weekend without successive Serie A victories since September 2023, when they stunned both Juventus and Inter Milan in consecutive games, scoring six goals and conceding three across both outings.

Predicted lineup: Muric (GK), Coulibaly, Idzes, Muharemovic, Doig, Kone, Matic, Vranckx, Berardi, Pinamonti & Lauriente

Last five matches

  • Sassuolo 1-0 Lazio
  • Cremonese 3-2 Sassuolo
  • Sassuolo 0-2 Napoli
  • Sassuolo 1-0 Catanzaro
  • Stade Brestois 1-1 Sassuolo

Off the back of a standout display in the Champions League, Marcus Thuram will be one to look out for this weekend as he spearheads Inter Milan’s attack at the San Siro.

With his double against Ajax, the French international has now posted a goal contribution in each of Inter’s four matches this season, netting five goals and setting up one more across the four games.

Thuram enjoyed a personal best scoring campaign for Inter Milan last season, when he netted 14 goals in 32 appearances (27 starts) to finish fifth in the Golden Boot race.
