Hull vs Southampton prediction: Southampton to open the scoring

Key stats

  • Southampton have netted the opening goal in six of their last eight games against Hull City since November 2013.
  • Hull City have failed to win five of their six home games across all competitions this season, losing three and claiming two draws so far.

Correct score prediction: Hull 1-2 Southampton

Hull City fought from behind to play out a 2-2 draw against Swansea City last time out and will look to build on that result this weekend. The Saints have been tough to crack this season and we predict they will extend their recent dominance in this fixture.

Hull City preview: Tigers without several players down the spine of the team

Hull turned in a resilient team display last Saturday when they fought back from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw against Swansea City at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Ronald and Zan Vipotnik scored on either side of Oliver McBurnie’s 45th-minute equaliser to put Swansea on course to a third straight victory, but Josh Egan struck in the seventh minute of stoppage time to force a share of the spoils.

Head coach Sergej Jakirovic will hope last weekend’s spirited display can serve as a catalyst for an upturn in form as Hull have failed to win five of the six games across all competitions to start the season.

However, Hull head into the weekend with a lengthy injury list as the likes of Nathan Tinsdale (knee), Matt Crooks (ankle), Eliot Matazo (knee) and Liam Millar (ACL) all continue their spells on the sidelines.

Experienced defender Semi Ajayi has missed each of the last five matches since coming off injured against Coventry in August’s season opener and will also sit out this weekend’s clash.

Predicted lineup: Pandur (GK), Coyle, Egan, Hughes, Giles, Hadziahmetovic, Lundstram, Akintola, Gelhardt, Joseph & McBurnie

Last five matches

  • Swansea 2-2 Hull
  • Bristol 4-2 Hull
  • Hull 0-3 Blackburn
  • Hull 3-2 Oxford
  • Hull 3-3 Wrexham (Wrexham win 5-4 on penalties)

Southampton preview: A solid away form

Southampton were involved in a share of the spoils for a second consecutive game last time out when they played out a goalless draw with Portsmouth.

A total of 19 shots were fired at the St Mary’s Stadium, but neither goalkeeper would end up picking the ball out of the back of the net, with a draw being a fair result upon reflection.

With last weekend’s result, Southampton have failed to win four straight Championship matches (3D, 1L) since kicking off the season with a 2-1 home victory over Wrexham.

Southampton will be backing themselves to bounce back on Saturday as they journey to the MKM Stadium unbeaten in their four away games this term, picking up two wins and two draws so far.

Predicted lineup: Bazunu (GK), Roerslev, Stephens, Harwood-Bellis, Manning, Jander, Charles, Fellows, Azaz, Fraser & Armstrong

Last five matches

  • Southampton 0-0 Portsmouth
  • Watford 2-2 Southampton
  • Norwich 0-3 Southampton
  • Southampton 1-2 Stoke
  • Ipswich 1-1 Southampton

Player to watch – Oliver McBurnie

Oliver McBurnie has enjoyed a solid start to life at Hull City, and the 29-year-old striker, who joined from Las Palmas in the summer window, will be one to keep an eye on this weekend.

McBurnie turned in another eye-catching display against Swansea last time out, when he added to the scoresheet to put the Tigers ahead right on the stroke of half time.

With his strike against the Swans, the Scottish forward now boasts five goal contributions in his first six games for Hull (3G, 2A) and we expect him to spearhead the attack once again.
