Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to retire from international football has brought an emotional chapter of his extraordinary career to a close, prompting renewed appreciation of what he achieved during more than two decades representing Portugal.

The 41-year-old leaves international football with 146 goals in 234 appearances, both men's records, having captained his country to the 2016 European Championship and two Nations League titles.

Although Ronaldo has not announced his retirement from club football, his impending departure from the international stage offers an opportunity to reflect on his standing among football's greatest players and, more intriguingly, his hypothetical transfer value at his peak.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner joined Real Madrid from Manchester United for £80m in 2009, but how much would a prime Ronaldo cost if he were available in today's market?

How much would prime Cristiano Ronaldo cost in today's transfer market?

Manchester United received £80m for Ronaldo in 2009, making him the most expensive footballer in history at the time.

Adjusted for UK consumer price inflation between 2009 and 2026, that fee would be approximately £139m today, representing a rise of around 74%.

However, general inflation does not account for the considerable growth in football's transfer market, as Paris Saint-Germain paid a world-record €222m (£200m) to sign Neymar from Barcelona in 2017, while Liverpool spent £125m on Alexander Isak in 2025.

Against that backdrop, a prime Ronaldo could reasonably command around £250m (€290m), comfortably exceeding the existing transfer record.

Ronaldo's numbers would justify a record-breaking fee

The strongest argument for such a valuation is Ronaldo's extraordinary consistency at Real Madrid, where he scored 450 goals in 438 appearances between 2009 and 2018.

His peak was particularly remarkable between 2011-12 and 2017-18, when he scored at least 42 goals in every season, including 60 in 2011-12 and a career-best 61 in 2014-15.

The Portuguese forward also delivered when the stakes were highest, scoring a record 17 goals during Real Madrid's 2013-14 Champions League-winning campaign.

He finished as the competition's leading scorer in seven different seasons and remains its all-time leading goalscorer with 140 strikes in 183 appearances.

Importantly, these numbers were not accumulated against inferior opposition, as Ronaldo consistently dominated Europe's strongest domestic competitions and repeatedly delivered against elite opponents in the Champions League, helping Real Madrid win four European titles during his nine-year spell.

How would prime Ronaldo compare with today's biggest stars?

The current generation has some extraordinary attacking talents, with Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal among the most highly valued players in the world.

CIES Football Observatory's June 2026 estimates placed Yamal at approximately €358m and Haaland at €227m, although these are model-based valuations rather than actual transfer fees.

Ronaldo would arguably belong in that conversation, particularly given his combination of goalscoring consistency, physical attributes, European pedigree and commercial appeal.

Unlike many highly valued young players, he would not have represented a gamble on potential.

At 28 or 29, he would have arrived with a proven record of delivering more than 50 goals in a season, winning major honours and performing under the pressure of football's biggest occasions.

His global popularity and sponsorship potential would also have offered significant commercial benefits to any prospective buyer.

Verdict: Ronaldo would be worth at least £250m

A £250m valuation is a reasonable estimate for Ronaldo at his peak in today's market, with the possibility of an even higher fee if several financially powerful clubs competed for his signature.

His retirement from international football provides a reminder of the extraordinary standard he maintained for more than two decades.

While modern football has produced several exceptional talents, few have combined Ronaldo's longevity, individual achievements, goalscoring output and ability to influence the biggest matches.

At his peak, he would arguably have been worth more than any footballer has ever cost.
