Following back-to-back defeats that saw Hoffenheim drop out of the top four, they have responded with a draw and two wins to move back into the Champions League places, only to slip to fifth again after Stuttgart picked up a point the following day.

Inconsistent form throughout April has seen Hoeneß’s side fall from third to fourth and lose the cushion they had built over the chasing pack, although a win here would restore a three-point gap.

A defeat to champions Bayern Munich and a draw with relegation candidates Werder Bremen were sandwiched between a dramatic DFB-Pokal semi-final victory settled in the 119th minute, with Stuttgart set to face Vincent Kompany’s side in next month’s final.

For the visiting side, they remain hit with injuries and will be without Ameen Al-Dakhil, Finn Jeltsch, Justin Diehl and Lazar Jovanovic.

Whereas the hosts will be without the services of Kelven Frees, Koki Machida, Tim Lemperle and Adam Hlozek because of injury.

Both Robin Hranac and Grischa Promel will be unavailable through suspension.

The last meeting between the pair came back in December in the final game before the winter break, they played out a goalless draw.
