Heidenheim to win

Heidenheim have won their last four games

Heidenheim will take on Wolfsburg in the opening game of the 2025-26 Bundesliga season at the Voith-Arena on Saturday, 23 August.

Both sides are heading into the game on the back of convincing wins in the DFB-Pokal games. But who has the edge? Find that out from our Heidenheim vs Wolfsburg prediction below.

Heidenheim vs Wolfsburg prediction: Home side to secure a narrow win

Key stats

  • Heidenheim are heading into the match on the back of a 5-0 win against Bahlinger SC.
  • Wolfsburg thrashed SV Hemelingen 9-0 in the DFB-Pokal last week, with six goals coming in the second half.
  • The home side have won in their last four games, scoring 11 goals.

Correct score prediction: Heidenheim 2-1 Wolfsburg

Frank Schmidt's side retained their Bundesliga status after securing a nail-biting victory over Elversberg in the relegation playoff.

Wolfsburg finished 11th last season, and they have appointed Paul Simonis as their new manager. The Dutchman is comparatively less experienced than his counterpart, and Heidenheim are likely to secure all three points.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Both teams to score

  • HOME: 2/1 (3.0) – 33.33%
  • DRAW: 5/2 (3.5) – 28.60%
  • AWAY: 6/5 (2.2) – 45.50%

Thus, we can see that Heidenheim are slight favourites between the two sides. They have made two excellent signings in the summer, and their recent pre-season form puts them marginally ahead of Wolfsburg.

Most recent H2Hs: Evenly matched

In the previous season, Heidenheim won 1-0 away at the Volkswagen Arena, whereas Wolfsburg won 3-1 away from home.

In 2023/24, Wolfsburg drew 1-1 away at Voith-Arena and won 2-0 at home. However, it's a new season, and Heidenheim will want to start on a positive note in front of home fans.

Heidenheim preview: Looking to maintain impressive form

After finishing 16th in the Bundesliga table last season, Heidenheim faced Elversberg in the relegation playoff.

They were 2-0 at home, and then the fight back began. They managed a 2-2 draw in the first leg, and then secured a 2-1 win in the second leg with Leio Scienza scoring in deep stoppage time.

Scienza scored twice in the DFB-Pokal clash last week, while Heidenheim picked up a convincing win.

Last season, they conceded 64 goals in the league, and therefore, they are likely to concede again against Wolfsburg on Saturday.

Predicted lineup: Ramaj (GK); Mainkra, Gimber, Siersleben; Schoppner, Dorsch, Ibrahimovic, Conteh; Honsak, Scienza & Zivzivadze

Wolfsburg preview: Can they pick up an away win?

It was a good decision to remove Ralph Hasenhuttl as Wolfsburg were not progressing under the former Southampton manager. They finished 12th in 2023/24, and while they marginally improved, the performances were not good enough.

Simonis has only one season of senior management experience at Go Ahead Eagles, where he delivered the Dutch Cup, their first major trophy in 90 years.

The 9-0 victory over Hemelingen should not be seen as a big sign of improvement, especially considering they lost twice against Brighton & Hove Albion and lost 4-0 against Feyenoord in the pre-season games.

They are also missing several key players due to injuries. Denis Vavro needs surgery, while Andreas Skov Olsen is likely to be absent. Dzenan Pejcinovic scored a hat-trick in the previous game, and he would be looking to score on Saturday in the Bundesliga as well.

Predicted lineup: Grabara (GK); Fischer, Jenz, Koulierakis, Maehle; Arnold, Souza; Wimmer, Cerny Majer & Pejcinovic

Player to watch: Arijon Ibrahimovic

The 19-year-old is an exciting young winger who progressed through the academy ranks at Bayern Munich. The Bavarian giants have sent him on loan to Heidenheim to gain experience and get enough game time.

The youngster registered an assist in his first game for the club, and he could be a big threat for the Wolfsburg defence.
