Hamburger SV will be delighted by their showings in the Bundesliga last term given they secured survival with their 13th-placed finish, and they will be competing at the top level of German football for a second consecutive season.
Merlin Polzin's will not play their first league game of 2026-27 – they face the daunting task of getting the better of Borussia Dortmund – until August 29, though they are back in DFB-Pokal action on August 24 against SC Verl.
The last time that the hosts faced a British club came in July 2024, when they were beaten 3-0 by Cardiff City, and they were also beaten 2-1 by Rangers in July 2023.
Hamburger come into the clash having played two pre-season matches, losing 3-2 against SK Rapid on July 18 but winning 3-1 against Heidenheim on July 25.
Everton will be disappointed by their 2026-27 campaign, as while they comfortably avoided relegation after finishing in 13th place with 49 points, they failed to qualify for Europe.
Though securing a place in one of UEFA's three competitions is never straightforward, nine teams from the Premier League will be playing continental football, and that could make the Toffees a less attractive destination than many of their rivals.
Boss David Moyes has overseen three pre-season fixtures so far this summer, and his side have won one, drawn one and lost one, with their most recent result a 1-0 loss to Stoke City on Tuesday.
It will concern Moyes that key attacker Iliman Ndiaye has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, and losing the Senegalese forward so close to the start of the season would represent a significant blow.

Given both teams have not been the most productive, a prediction of Under 2.5 Goals at 1/1 (2) would be sensible.
The Toffees have been more threatening after the interval in clashes recently, and their showings after the break make a prediction of Everton to Win the Second Half at 15/8 (2.88) a value bet.
