Guatemala vs Panama predictions: Goals expected to flow

Key stats

  • Guatemala have not beaten Panama in almost two decades.
  • At least three goals were scored in six of Panama's last eight matches.
  • Panama opened the scoring in four of their last five games.

Correct score prediction: Guatemala 1-3 Panama

To be fair, Guatemala pulled off their biggest win in six years with a 1-0 victory over Jamaica in their Gold Cup opener. However, they are up against a Panama side that won three consecutive games, scoring a whopping 10 goals in the process.

Keeping in mind that Panama won seven of their last 10 encounters with Guatemala, we are confident that the CONCACAF Nations League finalists will extend their winning streak to four games.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Panama are clear favourites

  • HOME: 16/5 (4.20) – 23.8%
  • DRAW: 23/10 (3.30) – 30.3%
  • AWAY: 5/6 (1.83) – 54.5%

*Odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

With their 5-2 victory over Guadeloupe, Panama currently lead the Group C standings. They are tied on points with Guatemala, who defeated Jamaica by a single goal earlier this week.

Ahead of this encounter, Panama are the expected winners at 5/6 (1.83). Teams with these odds generally have a 54.5% probability of winning.

We have also pointed out that six of Panama's last eight games went above the 2.5-goal threshold. For this reason, over 2.5 total goals has an appealing look at 11/10 (2.10). That one has a 47.6% chance of landing.

Most recent H2Hs: A one-sided affair

Guatemala have a poor track record against Panama, as their most recent victory against the Nations League finalists was in August 2005.

Guatemala preview: Eyeing back-to-back wins for the first time in 12 months

Coach Luis Fernando Tena may not be able to call on Darwin Lom, as the striker sustained an injury in the opening victory over Jamaica. Should Lom be deemed unfit, Charleston Battery's Rubio Rubin is expected to take his place in the starting XI for this game.

Barring any unforeseen events, not much is expected to change in Tena's tactics for this game, as his men go head-to-head against group leaders Panama for a place in the knockouts.

Predicted lineup: Hagen (GK), Morales, Samayoa, Pinto, Herrera, Ramirez, Franco, Munoz, Robles, Santis & Rubin.

Panama preview: Looking to extend their winning streak

It was a goal-fest in their first group game, as Panama thumped Guadeloupe 5-2, with forward Ismael Diaz getting a brace. However, that win proved costly for Thomas Christiansen's men, as key midfielder and first scorer in that clash, Cristian Martinez, sustained an injury with 13 minutes left to play, becoming a major doubt for this crucial matchup with the Guatemalans.

Despite this setback, Panama have personnel to fall back on, with the likes of Victor Griffith slotting in perfectly in that attacking midfield role, giving Christiansen’s outfit creativity and flexibility down the middle.

Amir Murillo and Jorge Gutierrez put in a good shift at right-back and left-back, respectively, and would undoubtedly be in line for a starting berth here alongside two-goal hero Diaz and first-choice striker Eduardo Guerrero.

Predicted lineup: Mosquera (GK), Murillo, Escobar, Andrade, Gutierrez, Harvey, Godoy, Rodriguez, Griffith, Diaz & Guerrero.

Player to watch: Ismael Diaz

Ismael Diaz put in a solid performance earlier this week, scoring a brace in the first 17 minutes of Panama's 5-2 victory over Guadeloupe. The Universidad de Catolica forward has scored three times in his last two appearances and will look to extend his scoring run to three games.
