Go Ahead Eagles' hopes of finishing in the coveted top-nine places suffered a major blow last Saturday when they fought back from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw against Sparta Rotterdam.
Shunsuke Mito and Tobias Lauritsen scored on either side of Victor Edvardsen’s 51st-minute equaliser to put Sparta Rotterdam in front, but Julius Dirksen drilled home the equaliser in the 77th minute to force a share of the spoils.
Despite the result, head coach Melvin Boel will take pride in another fine show of fighting spirit from the Deventer outfit, who have picked up four wins and three draws from their last nine matches, scoring 19 goals and keeping six clean sheets since February 22.
The Pride of the IJssel head into the final two league games 11th in the Eredivisie standings, five points behind ninth-placed Sparta Rotterdam in the final Conference League playoff spot.
Should results in other group fixtures go their way this weekend, Go Ahead Eagles need maximum points to keep their slim qualifying hopes alive, but next up is the daunting challenge of an opposing side who have won eight of their last 10 meetings since March 2022.
Elsewhere, PSV Eindhoven were left with a sour taste of “what could have been” last Saturday when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Ajax after conceding a 92nd-minute equaliser at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
Anton Gaaei finished off a well-worked corner with a brilliant curler in the 11th minute to cancel out Ricardo Pepi’s early opener, and after Myron Boadu put the visitors in front in the 77th minute, Mika Godts hit back for Ajax in the second minute of stoppage time to force a share of the spoils.
Peter Bosz’s men had won each of their previous three matches, including a 4-3 victory over Feyenoord on April 4, a result which saw them seal the Eredivisie title and successfully defend their crown for the second straight season.
PSV Eindhoven, who are one win shy of surpassing their total win tally from last season (25), have racked up 79 points from their 32 league matches to sit 17 points clear of second-placed Feyenoord heading into the final two games.

Whispers predicts: Go Ahead Eagles 1-3 PSV Eindhoven
The form book and the underlying numbers point to PSV Eindhoven, and while we expect the hosts to put up a fight in front of their home supporters, we fancy Bosz’s side to come away with the win, currently priced at 1.60.
PSV have led at half time in seven of their last nine games against Boel’s men, and 2/2 at 2.37 is our second pick of the game, while PSV to win + over 2.5 goals at 2.20 is perhaps the value bet for us.
Four of their last five meetings have seen both teams score, and we are also backing BTTS – Yes at 1.36, while the correct score market has a correct score of 1-3 at 11.00.
> PSV to win + over 2.5 – Yes at 2.20 | Likelihood: Possible
> HT/FT – PSV/PSV at 2.37 | Likelihood: Possible
> Correct score: 1-3 at 11.00 | Likelihood: Outsider
