Genoa host Sudtirol at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Tuesday evening, with the winner of this Coppa Italia second-round tie earning a glamour last-16 trip to face Scudetto holders Inter Milan.
Daniele De Rossi's side finally secured their first Serie A point of the season on Saturday, coming from behind to draw with newly promoted Frosinone, but their underlying form remains a concern heading into a fixture the head coach cannot afford to lose lightly.
The visitors, by contrast, arrive full of confidence under new boss Davide Possanzini, unbeaten in all competitions since his summer appointment despite operating two divisions below their hosts.

Genoa's Serie A campaign has been troubling so far, and Saturday's result did little to fully ease those concerns, with the Grifone conceding 26 shots to their promoted opponents.
Having already shipped eight goals across their opening four matchdays, the Ligurian side's defensive structure under De Rossi remains a genuine worry, and the former Roma coach will know a cup exit here would only intensify the pressure.
There is at least some cup pedigree to draw on, as Genoa eased past Ascoli 4-1 in round one, scoring twice in each half at the Ferraris, and a first appearance beyond the last 16 since their solitary Coppa Italia triumph back in 1937 remains the target, even with Serie A survival the clear priority this season.
Elias Havel and Lorenzo Venturino remain the club's only confirmed absentees, and with league fixtures against fellow relegation candidates Frosinone and Parma sandwiching this tie, De Rossi is expected to rotate heavily.
Sudtirol arrive as clear underdogs given their limited history, but the Tyrolean club have shown they can punch above their weight, remaining in the second division for four straight seasons since winning promotion from Serie C.
Possanzini has made an encouraging start to this campaign, progressing past Catanzaro on penalties in round one and collecting eight points from a possible 12 in Serie B.
Their most recent outing, however, denied them an opportunity to top the Serie B table, with Alvin Okoro's first-half strike putting them ahead at home to Modena, only for an 88th-minute equaliser to cost them top spot in the table.
SuHamza El Kaouakibi is the visitors' only confirmed absentee. Kenny Mixtur, who scored the late goal that forced penalties in round one, will expect to start again, while AC Milan loanee Kevin Zeroli is expected to feature in midfield.

Whispers predicts: Genoa 1-0 Sudtirol
The under 2.5 goals is priced at 1.90 (9/10) and is well supported by the data on both sides, with this game having all the signs of a tight, low-scoring cup football.
Home advantage and the greater quality on Genoa's books make the home win market at 1.65 (13/20) the sensible starting point, even accounting for De Rossi's side's shaky domestic form and Sudtirol's genuine confidence under Possanzini.
For value, a correct score of 1-0 to Genoa accounts for the host’s quality while respecting Sudtirol's defensive discipline and the home side’s own struggles to score freely in Serie A this season.
> Match result — Genoa win at 1.65 (13/20) | Likelihood: Probable
> Under 2.5 goals at 1.90 (9/10) | Likelihood: Probable
