Freiburg come into the match with a two-goal advantage following a 3-1 victory in Scotland last week, and are now expected to cruise through the league phase with relative ease.

Motherwell's dreams of playing in the league phase of a European competition will almost certainly have to wait at least another year following their 3-1 defeat last week.

While the tie is still not officially dead, it will take a Herculean effort from Alfred Johansson's side to overturn the deficit on Thursday, and attention has likely already turned to Sunday's Scottish Premiership match against St. Mirren.

Assuming everything goes as expected this week, it will be a sad end to a qualifying campaign that has seen Motherwell come through two rounds, recording victories over HJK and HB Torshavn.

Johansson has some big decisions to make on Thursday in terms of personnel. One man who will definitely remain in Scotland is Martin Moormann, after he was sent off in the first leg.

As for Freiburg, they will be playing in the League Phase of the Conference League this season, provided they remain professional on Thursday night.

After conceding first last week, the Europa League runners-up clicked into top gear and eventually ran out as 3-1 winners. The third goal, scored by Keisuke Goto in added time, means they have breathing space on Thursday night, making life easier.

Manager Julian Schuster will be desperate for a deep run in Europe this season after losing in the final of the Europa League last season. While there is no chance of them avenging that defeat to Aston Villa this season, they can do the next best thing and win the Conference League.

Schuster will not take any unnecessary risks on Thursday, meaning defender Maximilian Rosenfelder will almost certainly sit this one out after picking up a knock in the first leg.
