The World Cup may be ongoing in North America, but the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League season is about to begin across Europe.
The first round of Champions League qualifying will take place across the next fortnight, with the first legs set to be played on Tuesday, 7 and Wednesday, 8 July.
In this preview, we will focus on the match between Floriana and Shamrock Rovers.

Although this match is listed as a UEFA Champions League clash, there is only a very tiny chance that either of these sides will feature in the league phase when it begins in September.
Instead, the aim for both Floriana and Shamrock Rovers will be to go as deep as they possibly can in Champions League qualifying, to give themselves the best possible chance of qualifying for one of the other UEFA Competitions.
This match marks Floriana's first competitive outing in nearly two months, which is likely a concern for manager Daniel Portela. The last time they took to the field, they were celebrating their 27th top-flight Maltese title.
As far as their recent record in Europe goes, it isn't fantastic. In each of the last two seasons, they have reached the second round of the Europa Conference League qualifying, but are awaiting their first win in a Champions League match in more than 30 years.
Team selection is a little bit of an unknown for Floriana ahead of this one. New signing Robert Muric could make his debut, or Portela could elect to stick with what won them the league last season.
As for Shamrock Rovers, they have had more joy than their opponents in Europe in recent years. The Irish side have reached the league phase of the Europa Conference League in each of the last two seasons and made it to the knockout stages in 24/25.
They should also be more match fit than their Maltese opponents, with the League of Ireland Premier Division season still ongoing. Rovers are currently leading the way by seven points and are on course for their 23rd title.
Stephen Bradley, who has led Shamrock Rovers since 2016, is well-versed in these matches and will not be phased by an awkward away tie. Bradley knows that anything other than a defeat will leave them in a great position ahead of the second leg back home.
After beating Sligo Rovers 2-1 last time out, Bradley is expected to name an unchanged XI.
