While Fenerbahce endured some nervy moments in their Champions League second-round qualifier against Gornik Zabrze, they made light work of Sturm Graz in the next phase, cruising to a 3-0 aggregate victory.
Heading into their Super Lig opener against Genclerbirligi, Ismail Kartal’s men were riding an 11-game unbeaten streak, one which they looked set to extend after Anderson Talisca opened the scoring before Franco Tongya and Ogulcan Ulgun turned the game on its head.
With little time to dwell on his first defeat in charge, Kartal must now rally his side for Tuesday’s high-profile encounter as the Yellow Canaries bid to return to Europe’s top table for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign.
Having fallen at this stage to Benfica last season, Fenerbahce will be eager to avoid the near-success syndrome once again, but their record against Lyon hardly makes for good reading, with a 0-0 draw in the 2025 Europa League the only time they have avoided defeat across five meetings.
Fenerbahce have opened the scoring in their last eight matches, and another fast start on Tuesday – at a home ground where they are unbeaten in nine competitive games since February’s loss to Nottingham Forest – would put them on course for victory.
Facing elimination after a 2-1 first-leg defeat to Sparta Prague, Lyon delivered a sparkling performance to win 3-0 in the return leg, edging closer to ending their six-year Champions League absence.
Paulo Fonseca’s side now head to Istanbul aiming for another positive result against Fenerbahce, having dominated the previous encounters.
However, their record against Turkish opponents is less glamorous: six wins from 14 matches (D3, L5).
Fonseca surprised many by openly declaring Fenerbahce favourites to progress because of the difference in squad investment, but the 53-year-old and his players will not go down without a fight.
Given Lyon’s away struggles – just one win from their last eight official matches – this is a tough time to face back-to-back road games, and the visitors will need to rise to the occasion, starting with the trip on Tuesday before their Ligue 1 opener against Toulouse.
