Japan's top flight is preparing to move towards a traditional September-to-May calendar, meaning FC Tokyo competed in a shortened J1 League season before the change.
That format appeared to benefit the Japanese outfit, who finished second after 18 matches, eight points behind champions Kashima Antlers.
A major reason behind their strong campaign was their defensive record, with FC Tokyo conceding just 16 goals, the second-best figure in the division, while their tally of 28 goals was bettered by only one side.
However, their season ended with a slight dip in form as they failed to win any of their final three matches, while they will now look to build momentum ahead of their return to league action on August 8.
Rikizo Matsuhashi's side opened their pre-season schedule with a 2-1 victory over Nagoya and will now face one of Europe's biggest clubs before beginning the second half of their domestic campaign.
As for Borussia Dortmund, they arrive in Japan looking to recover from consecutive pre-season defeats.
The Black and Yellow began their summer with a 3-1 victory over Oberhausen, with Justin Lerma, Serhou Guirassy and Takato Yamamoto scoring after Dortmund fell behind early.
However, their momentum was halted as they surrendered a lead against Fortuna Düsseldorf before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Cerezo Osaka during their Asian tour.
Despite those setbacks, Dortmund head into the new season with renewed optimism after a significant improvement last term, collecting 16 more Bundesliga points than they managed in the previous campaign.
The challenge for Nico Kovac will be continuing that progress and closing the gap on Bayern Munich, who have dominated German football in recent years and remain without a Bundesliga title rival since Dortmund's last triumph in 2011-12.
