Eric Dier aiming for a sensational England recall ahead of Euro 2024.

30-year-old Bayern Munich defender Eric Dier has revealed he’s aiming for a return to Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of Bayern Munich's Champions League last 16 clash with Arsenal.

Dier, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur has grown into an important figure for Bayern since arriving in January, starting ahead of the expensively-acquired Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-Jae for Thomas Tuchel.

A return to form?

Speaking to The Overlap podcast, Dier said “obviously, I want to be a part of the England set-up and I believe that I should be a part of it, that I'm that level of a player”.

Dier’s last Three Lions appearance came from the bench at the 2022 World Cup against Senegal, but the Englishman says “I'm playing the best football of my career”.

The now-Bayern man saw his opportunities under new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou limited, with just four Premier League appearances before his January switch to Bavaria.

Thomas Tuchel seems to have a far greater appreciation for the former Sporting man. He has started him in 11 of Bayern’s last 15 games, including the impressive 2-2 draw with Arsenal, in what was a hostile return to North London.

Dier is a player who feels like he’s been around a long time, perhaps to be expected after nearly a decade of service for Tottenham, and is often perceived as older than his 30 years. Dier remarked “people think that I'm 37 or something”.

Race for the Euros

The Spurs loanee will face stiff competition to get back into the England squad. Harry Maguire and John Stones are Gareth Southgate’s first choice pairing, but the Three Lions have considerable depth at the heart of defence.

Dier will have to fend off competition from the likes of Fikayo Tomori, Marc Guehi, Lewis Dunk, Jarrad Branthwaite and Ezri Konsa.

As Dier told The Overlap: “play as well as possible for your club and then the decision is out of your hands”.
