England to win (-3 handicap)

England's last four wins have seen them score 4+ goals without reply

There is still a chance for both England and Wales to reach the knockout stage of the UEFA Women's European Championships as they prepare to face off against each other in Switzerland on Sunday night. Should England win and Netherlands fail to beat France, then they would definitely go through in Group D, and could even progress regardless of other results.

Wales know that they have to win and the Netherlands have to lose to France to have any chance, which will be a tall order for the tournament debutants up against the current holders. Nonetheless, it promises to be an interesting battle between the British nations, especially with plenty still at stake.

England Women vs Wales Women prediction: Lionesses to roar to victory?

Key stats

  • England have won three of their last five games in all competitions to-nil, scoring an impressive total of 17 goals.
  • Wales have lost four matches in a row in all competitions, scoring just twice and conceding 12 goals in total.
  • Wales have failed to score against England in the previous four H2Hs.

Correct score prediction: England Women 4-0 Wales Women

Given the gulf in class between the two teams and the superior form of England compared to Wales, we should be expecting a comfortable Lionesses victory. It may then just be a matter of predicting just how many goals they score, with four or more seemingly likely based on their most recent victories.

Pre-game odds and win probability: England heavily favoured by bookmakers

  • HOME: 1/20 (1.05) – 95.2%
  • DRAW: 16/1 (17.00) – 5.9%
  • AWAY: 33/1 (34.00) – 2.9%

*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

Unsurprisingly, England are heavily fancied by bookmakers to claim all three points. Both a draw and a Wales win are given less than a 10% chance of happening, according to the implied probabilities.

Most recent H2Hs: England totally dominant

England are unbeaten in the previous four meetings between them and Wales, winning three of them. The Red Dragons have failed to even score a goal against the Lionesses, let alone beat them, which further suggests that a victory for them is again highly unlikely.

England Women preview: Stick to winning formula?

England head coach Sarina Wiegman could be tempted to stick to the same XI that beat Netherlands 4-0 so convincingly last time out. That means that goalscorer Ella Toone will likely retain her place in the attacking midfield position.

Predicted lineup: Hampton (GK); Bronze, Williamson, Greenwood, Carter; Walsh, Stanway; James, Toone, Hemp & Russo

Wales Women preview: Ladd still a fitness doubt

Hayley Ladd was an unused substitute in Wales' 4-1 defeat to France last time out, and due to fitness issues, may also miss this clash. The likes of Hannah Cain and Rhiannon Roberts could be recalled from the bench though into the starting XI.

Predicted lineup: Middleton-Patel (GK); Green, Roberts, Evans, Woodham; Rowe, James, Fishlock; Holland, Morgan & Cain

Player to watch: Alessia Russo

Alessia Russo, perhaps to her disappointment, is yet to get on the scoresheet for England at the Euros so far. She has come close, notably scoring a disallowed goal against France in their opening game that could have changed their fortunes.

Despite not scoring against Netherlands either, Russo managed to record an impressive three assists. It makes her the joint-highest assister in the competition so far, but the Arsenal striker will no doubt be desperate to open her goalscoring account against Wales.
