Atletico Madrid return to action in the UEFA Champions League when they visit the Jan Breydel Stadium to face Club Brugge in the first leg of the playoffs on Wednesday. Having both missed out on a top-eight finish in the group-stage phase, both sides will be looking to place one foot in the round of 16 and this makes for an exciting watch.

FootballWhispers’ Club Brugge vs Atletico Madrid takes a look at the changes of both teams coming away with the desired result in Belgium.

Club Brugge turned in a dominant team display in their crunch Champions League group finale against French outfit Marseille on January 28, when they secured an emphatic 3-0 victory at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Having managed just one point from their first five group games, a 4-1 victory over Kazakhstan side Kairat Almaty on January 20 rekindled Club Brugge’s dreams of finishing in the top 24 for a second consecutive season.

The Belgian outfit went into the group finale two points behind Marseille in the standings, but goals from Mamadou Diakhon, Romeo Vermant and Aleksandar Stankovic saw them secure a 19th-placed finish in the table and sent Marseille crashing out of the competition.

While Ivan Leko’s men head into Tuesday’s first leg as the underdogs, they will draw inspiration from last season’s heroics at this stage of the competition, when they thrashed Serie A side Atalanta 5-2 on aggregate to show they are capable of upsetting the odds.

Club Brugge are on a run of five wins from their last six games across all competitions since January 20, but the bookmakers have their chances of victory on Tuesday currently priced at 27/10.

This indicates a 27% likelihood of the Belgian outfit picking up the result, with Atletico Madrid given a significantly higher 52.4% win probability, while there is a 26.3% chance of the tie ending all square.

Atletico Madrid journey to the Jan Breydel Stadium still licking their wounds from last Sunday’s humbling 3-0 defeat against Rayo Vallecano in the La Liga.

With that result, Diego Simeone’s men have now lost consecutive La Liga games for the second time since the start of December, including a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Real Betis on February 8.

Sandwiched between the two league losses, Atletico Madrid placed one foot in the final of the Copa del Rey on February 12 when they hammered Barcelona 4-0 in the first leg of their semi-final clash courtesy of goals from Antoine Griezmann, Ademola Lookman, Julian Alvarez and an early own goal from Eric Garcia.

The Spanish giants, who sit fourth in the La Liga table, now turn their focus to the Champions League, where a run of just one point from their final two games in the group-stage phase derailed their push for automatic entry into the round of 16 as they finished outside of the coveted top-eight places.

Having picked up four wins from their first five matches in the group phase, Atletico Madrid dropped two points in a 1-1 draw against Galatasaray on January 21, one week before suffering a shock 2-1 defeat against Bodo/Glimt at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

While we take a deeper dive into both teams, you can take a look at some of FootballWhispers’ best picks and predictions for the European fixtures in today’s free football betting tips.

Lookman has hit the ground running since his move from Atalanta in the winter window, and having come off the bench against Rayo Vallecano last time out, we expect the Nigerian forward to return to the XI on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old has been involved in four goals across four matches since his switch from Italy, including a goal and an assist to inspire Simeone’s men to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey on February 12.

With Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth forming the two-man attack, Lookman should start on the left side of the midfield four, teaming up with Koke, Marcos Llorente and 23-year-old Giuliano Simeone.
