Liam Rosenior has conceded this week that his Chelsea side are 'running out of time' in their bid to secure a place in next season's UEFA Champions League, and with just six games of the Premier League season to go, the situation is certainly critical.
After a bright start as Chelsea boss, Rosenior has now overseen a desperate run of form that has seen his side win just one Premier League match in more than two months.
In that time, the Blues have also been knocked out of the Champions League by PSG by an aggregate score of 8-2, and pressure is already mounting on the former Hull boss as he looks to prove he is the right man to take the club forward next season.
For the clash with Man Utd on Saturday night, Rosenior will welcome Enzo Fernandez back into the fold after the Argentinian was suspended by the club for two matches following the public comments he made about his future at Stamford Bridge.
Reece James, Levi Colwill, Filip Jorgensen and Jamie Gittens are all injured, but there is half a chance that Trevoh Chalobah could recover from an ankle injury in time to be part of the matchday squad.
As for Manchester United, this match represents an opportunity to get back on track after a humbling defeat to Leeds United at Old Trafford on Monday night.
The Red Devils succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, and although plenty had been made of Lisandro Martinez's red card just after half-time, Leeds were well worth the three points, and United will need to improve if they are to walk away with anything on Saturday night.
Michael Carrick's hot start as the club's interim manager has cooled off since the beginning of March, and he has overseen just one win from his last four matches in charge. In many ways, they are quite fortunate to still be third in the league table and in pole position for Champions League qualification.
Carrick will be acutely aware that performances will need to improve again down the stretch if he is to land the role on a full-time basis, and an away win at Chelsea would go a long way.
The task at hand has not been made any easier by the news that Harry Maguire will be suspended for a further one game following his sending off at Bournemouth last week. Martinez is also suspended, while Kobbie Mainoo is an injury doubt.
