Al-Hilal were reported on 2 November to be preparing a €55m (£45m) January bid for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Within a day, Ben Jacobs said there is no truth in suggestions the Saudi club will rekindle their interest this winter.

Fernandes has 12 months left on his United contract, so the story is unlikely to disappear.

The Whispers Index weighs the money, the buying club's need, the player's motivation, the selling club's incentive and the strength of the reporting.

On paper the move works, because Al-Hilal can afford the fee and have no established attacking midfielder.

The reporting is what holds it back, because the only source for the bid is Tuttomercatoweb and Jacobs has contradicted it directly.

The most decisive fact is Jacob's claim that every foreign-player slot in Al-Hilal's squad is already full.

Financial viability

Financial viability17 / 25
  • Tuttomercatoweb reported on 2 November that Al-Hilal are ready to bid around €55m (£45m) in January, and no club has lodged an official offer.
  • Al-Hilal's 2025 approach was reported at up to £100m before Fernandes turned it down, so the January figure is less than half that.
  • Fernandes's contract expires on 30 June 2027, and Manchester United hold an option to extend it by 12 months.
  • Al-Hilal said their 2024-25 revenue passed $340m, a figure the club says would have put them in the top 20 of Deloitte's Football Money League.

The reported €55m is less than half of the £100m Al-Hilal were said to be ready to pay in 2025, which makes this a far smaller ask than the one Fernandes rejected.

His contract expires on 30 June 2027, and United's 12-month option means they hold leverage on timing.

Al-Hial said their 2024-25 revenue passed $340m, so a fee of this size is not a stretch for them.

Buying club need

Buying club need15 / 20
  • Saimon Bouabre, 20, is the only specialist attacking midfielder in Al-Hilal's squad.
  • Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Mohamed Kanno are listed as central midfielders, so the vacancy is for a creator rather than another body in the middle.
  • Fernandes recorded 9 goals and 21 assists in 35 Premier League starts in 2025-26, a record assist return for the competition, and turned 32 on 8 September.

Saimon Bouabre, 20, is the only specialist attacking midfielder in Al-Hilal's squad.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Mohamed Kanno cover centeral midfield, so what is missing is a genuine creator.

Fernandes supplied 21 assists in 35 Premier League starts last season, which is exactly the profile the Saudi side lack.

At 32 he is a short-term fix rather than a long-term build.

Player motivation

Player motivation5 / 15
  • Fernandes turned down Al-Hilal in June 2025 after talking it over with his family, saying he wanted to compete at the highest level.
  • United finished third in the Premier League last season and are back in the Champions League, while Al-Hilal play in the AFC Champions League Elite.
  • Fernandes has said it hurts him a little that United would have let him leave in 2025.
  • Michael Carrick held frank talks with him in late October after a public falling out over tactics during a winless run.

Fernandes said no in June 2025 after speaking to his family, telling Al-Hilal he wanted to compete at the highest level.

Moving would take him from the Premier League and Champions League football to the Saudi Pro League and the AFC Champions League Elite.

His relationship with United is strained, with a falling out with Michael Carrick and his own comment that it hurts him a little that the club would have let him leave.

He remains in contract talks with United, which David Ornstein described as an impasse on 13 September.

Selling club incentive

  • Keith Wyness expects United to trigger the 12-month option and sell later, and Football Insider reported on 26 October that United are weighing a sale next summer.
  • Fernandes has three goals and one assist from his first eight league starts of 2026-27, against 21 assists in 35 starts last season.
  • The Mirror reported in June that United paused contract talks, and David Ornstein described the later talks as an impasse on 13 September.

Keith Wyness expects United to trigger the 12-month option and sell later, and Football Insider reported on 26 October that the Red Devils are weighing a sale next summer.

That points to thje summer rather than January as the realisitc window for an exit.

His output is down, with three goals and one assist in eight league starts against his 30 goal involements in 35 last season.

  • The €55m January bid story traces to Tuttomercatoweb's Andrea Losapio on 2 November, and Goal, Football365 and OneFootball all cite that report.
  • Ben Jacobs said on X that there is no truth in suggestions Al-Hilal will rekindle their interest this winter.
  • Jacobs added that every foreign-player slot in Al-Hilal's squad is already filled.
  • AC Milan, now managed by Ruben Amorim, are monitoring Fernandes, though no club has made an offer.

The €55m January bid traced to Tuttomercatoweb's Andrea Losapio, with Goal, Football365 and OneFootball all citing his report.

Jacobs, who reported Al-Hilal's 2025 meeting with Fernandes agent, says there is no truth in it.

He added that every foregin-player slot is full. which is a pratical block rather than a lack of will.

AC Milan under Ruben Amorim are also monitoring Fernandes, but no club has made an offer as of yet.

Bruno Fernandes to Al-Hilal: Will or won't it happen?

The verdict45 / 100
Bruno Fernandes to Al-Hilal sits at 45 because Ben Jacobs has ruled out a January approach, even though a 32-year-old with 12 months left on his deal and a club able to pay him makes the move plausible on paper.
It happens if Al-Hilal clear a foreign-player slot and Fernandes decides his stalled contract talks at United are not worth waiting on.
It dies if United trigger the one-year option and he stays, or if Milan or another European club offers the Champions League level football he told Al-Hilal he wanted.

For the deal to go through, Al-Hilal need to clear a foreign-player slot and Fernandes needs to decide his United future is not worth waiting on.

What kills it is United triggering the one-year option, or a European club offering the Champions League football he told Al-Hilal he wanted.

The score covers the winter window only, and the 12-month option keeps the summer open.
